Grows with your little one
on 5 June 2015
I love Britax products and they are one of the baby brands my husband and I return to again and again for our two little ones (baby daughter and toddler son) as we trust in their safety and design and have had no issues with any of their products we have bought thus far (Britax Evolva 1-2-3 Plus in Black Thunder and Chili Pepper and have had the Max colour also, Britax Baby-Safe Plus SHR II, Britax B Dual with second seat, soft carry cot, second seat frame and cosytoes). We have just bought another Britax Evolva Plus in Chili Pepper to go in my husbands car for when he picks up the children occasionally and once again we couldn't be happier with the seat.
The Evolva's are one of the comfiest car seats we have ever used for our little ones as they have plenty of padding on the seat, seat back and sides along with the harness straps also being very well padded too. The car seat grows with your child and is suitable for between 9 months old and approximately 12 years old and so whilst it may seem a little expensive when initially buying it, the fact that it will last potentially until your child is 12 means even if you purchase it at the full price that it works out at just over £13 a year for your childs safety. The seat starts out as a full harness seat and then transforms to a booster seat with high back as your little one gets older so effectively you probably only need to buy this one car seat after your infant car seat and it has the added bonus of having side impact protection which you wouldn't get with a booster cushion.
The headrest is height adjustable and there is even a recline position if you wish to use it. We couldn't work out how to recline the seat for ages after we bought our first one and actually thought you were meant to buy a separate wedge but the wedge is already inbuilt into the seat and is underneath it. You simply flip the wedge out from the back of the seat to the front and the best place to see this is on the Britax website on their instructional video on how to fit the car seat. In fact the instruction book is quite difficult to follow and I found the video much easier to make sense of.
The seat cover is removable for washing which is a must with a little one and any potential accidents or even just spills and general food mess. The seat also has two pull out cup or snack holders with one on each side which my children use all of the time when out and about in the car.
The five point safety harness is really easy to use and adjust once you get the hang of it as when loosening the straps you need to sort of pull downwards at an angle with your hand which I found tricky at first to master but now find it very easy to do. I personally love the click safe system which I find reassuring to know that the harness is securely locked into place. Obviously you still have to check the harness is tight enough as it's not clever enough to know that by itself but once it is to the required tightness the click lets you know it is safely locked into place.
My one gripe is the packaging it arrives in as it literally arrives in a cardboard box with no padding and just a plastic bag over it rather than some foam pieces or bubble wrap etc to protect it. I would think that the seat should really have some sort of protective wrapping to protect against knocks and bangs in transit on it's way to you but as both the seats we have bought (in different years and with Amazon and a different large baby store) have arrived with exactly the same packaging this is obviously intentional from Britax.
The seat has harness retainers on each side which to be honest I've only just discovered that that is what they are three seats on! It also has a handy storage compartment in the back to store the instruction book so that you always have it to hand. The logo design has just been changed on this new Evolva car seat compared against our older one with the older one having the Britax name with a silver background on the middle of the headrest and the new one has it in black with slightly different lettering and also repeated on the side of the headrest too but other than that the designs are the same.
So in summary a fantastic multi stage car seat which grows with your child and has comfort in mind as well as safety. We love the seat so much that we have now bought it a few times and I honestly can't recommend it enough.
