5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning documentary of Amicus Films, 25 Nov 2012
This review is from: Amicus House of Horrors [DVD] [US Import] (DVD)
For far too long Amicus films have been somewhat in the shadow of Hammer Film productions when looking back over the genre, which is perhaps a little surprising when you consider that they were responsible for some of the most classic and entertaining films of the era such as Tales From The Crypt, Asylum, Dr Terror's House of Horrors and many others.
This was due in no small part, in my opinion, to the fact that no one had spent the time and effort to produce a comprehensive resume of the Studio - but I'm delighted to say that, once again, along comes Derek Pykett to literally save the day!

As with his other sterling efforts [ Michael Ripper Unmasked, British Horror Film Locations, The Danzigger Collector's Edition [DVD], House of the Long Shadows (1983) DVD] ] Derek Pykett has taken it on himself to put together a highly enjoyable, fascinating and thorough documentary about the Studio.
As with his other work, then were it not for his efforts then such details would have been lost forever and fans of the genre such as myself would never have had the opportunity to enjoy these reminiscences. So credit where it's due!

The documentary covers each film chronologically and it is a delight to hear from so many of those involved in the productions, from the likes of Geoffrey Bayldon, Angela Pleasence, Barbara Ewing and Kenny Lynch to Directors Stephen Weeks and Kevin Connor. We also hear from people who worked in art design and make-up and their memories about the running of the studio and the stars involved is simply marvellous.

I have no problem at all with the film and sound quality and as a delightful extra bonus we have two wonderful interviews with Peter Cushing included on the discs. The first is almost an hour long from 1983 and the second from the series The Human Factor where Peter speaks openly about his dear wife Helen who died in 1971.

In conclusion then this is a great dvd for any fan of the genre - and one to treasure. Bravo to Derek Pykett for his efforts in putting this together. Entertaining with some fascinating insights into the Studio, great value for money and the sort of thing you can dip into time and again.
In a word - Brilliant ...!

This set covers the history of Amicus films; a competitor to Hammer films during the 60's and 70's but if you're looking at this item you probably already know that!. This is very much a one man labour of love, with quite low rate production at times but this matters little; the information is well researched and engaging and it is fantastic to see the fantastic Geoffrey Bayldon again. The discs also include some classic archive items featuring the wonderful Peter Cushing. Buy it now before it goes for 100 on ebay!!

This is the ultimate love story for the under dog that was Amicus films - this 5 hour plus documentary is crammed with information. Yes it does not have the production values of other documentaries but what it lacks in style it more than makes up in the information given. Great companion DVD (region Free) to the classic Amicus movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars The DVD that dripped love!, 22 July 2013

This is a double-disc set that is made with love and enthusiasm. If you want lots of behind-the-scenes clips and sequences from the films to illustrate the copious interviews, then this won`t be for you. It`s a very low-budget documentary that uses public domain theatrical trailers of vintage quality, and the sound and picture quality of the interviews probably would not be considered of broadcast standard...but we get to hear the stories and anecdotes of those both in-front of and behind the camera that I have not heard before. Producer/director (and presenter!) Derek Pykett knows his subject well and gets the most out of everyone he interviews, and virtually every aspect of the films is touched in some way.

The extras are gold themselves - two interviews with the wonderful Peter Cushing - and it is clear that nobody has anything but the utmost love, respect and enthusiasm for him. Which is echoed in Derek Pykett`s documentary on the little brother of Hammer, Amicus Films.

Great fun!
