5.0 out of 5 stars Super watch for the money, 13 Jun 2013

This review is from: Laco 1925 Men's Automatic Watch with Black Dial Analogue Display and Black Leather Strap 861760 (Watch)
Delighted with it - Laco have a good reputation for producing military styled mechanical watches at good value. This watch fits the bill if you want a 1940's styled watch. Dial is clear, the watch is well proportioned and the Miyota movement (made by Citizen) should be reliable. Leather strap is excellent quality. All in all, an excellent buy. Would recommend it.

The B-Uhr, short for Beobachtungs-uhr, meaning: "Observation watch", also known as Pilot's watches, B-watches and Flieger watches, were made for the German Luftwaffe during WWII. They were originally specified to have a 55mm diameter case to be worn over flight suites, with large, clear to read dials and include a large diamond shape crown, suitable to operate with gloves. There were two dials made, with the earlier and simpler Type A (Baumuster A) dial in 1939/1940 and then the Type B (Baumuster B) dial in 1941. The newer Type B dial featured main minute numerals and an inner hour circle. Only 5 manufacturers produced this watch:

A. Lange & Söhne
Laco (Lacher & Co)
Stowa (Walter Storz)
Wempe (Chronometerwerke Hamburg)
IWC

In my quest to find a suitable B-Uhr watch, I looked at many different brands and I was very close to ruling the above original manufacturers out, due to cost - but then I stumbled across this Laco Bielefeld 861760 here on Amazon, which uses the cheaper Miyota 8215 non-hacking 21 jewel movement (marked as Laco 21), with a uni-directional winding system (left rotation), an accuracy of -20 to +40 seconds per day, and a power reserve of over 40 hours. Of course, I always desire a Swiss movement, which are more refined but far more expensive. So far though, the Miyota movement has been reliable and excellent at keeping time. Mine runs slightly fast, gaining around 5-7 seconds a day, which is respectable. It is also noisier than the swiss automatic movement used in my Oris F1 Team Skeleton (ORIS 733, base SW 200), but that hasn't really bothered me. You may also sometimes notice the hesitant second hand, which is a characteristic of the "Indirect Seconds" design in this movement. It does not have any effect on the watches accuracy or timekeeping and is totally normal.

In person, the watch looks fabulous and the photos don't really convey the style and quality this watch offers. You get a lovely clean looking Type B dial encased in a nicely sized 42mm diameter / 13mm thick black PVD plated stainless steel case, which feels excellent quality and nicely weighted. There's superior quality Sapphire Crystal glass to the front and Mineral Crystal used for the exhibition glass back. One of the best lume produced is used in this watch: Super-LumiNova C3, which is extremely bright and illuminates every feature on the dial, so it looks very impressive at night. The strap is made of nice quality thick calf leather, which does take a couple of days to wear-in, as the leather is quite stiff at first, but now it's extremely comfortable. The crown isn't quite the same as the original diamond shape, but it's nice and subtle, and doesn't dig into your hand if wearing the watch loose.

Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this watch. It's great quality, modestly priced and closely faithful to the original B-Uhr Type B watch. It's received many compliments so far and fits very well with casual wear and even looks good with more formal attire.

I love it! Highly recommended!

This review is from: Laco 1925 Men's Automatic Watch with Black Dial Analogue Display and Black Leather Strap 861760 (Watch)
Amazing watch. I truely recommend it! The strap is very strong and very well made. The Miyota 821A movement seems to work fine. It comes inside a very beautifull dark box. The watch says Made in Germany, so if you don't know much about watches you will never know if you have a Miyota, ETA or Laco movement... who cares... as long as it works fine.... In the darkness or shadow you can clearly see the luminous from the dial! Amazing!Laco 1925 Classics Men's Automatic Watch with Black Dial Analogue Display and Grey Leather Strap 861760

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, 24 Feb 2014

This review is from: Laco 1925 Men's Automatic Watch with Black Dial Analogue Display and Black Leather Strap 861760 (Watch)
The delivery was not as prompt as I was led to believe and the delivery charge was added as an extra.
However the watch seems to tell the time as expected
It seems smooth in its operation
The watch strap is thick and solid and the watch itself comfortable to wear and look at
Accuracy is something that I have not tested yet
