This was a really good book that kept me guessing until the end. It's full of little shocks and twists and turns.

Another knuckle ride! Gritty, unique with real characters. Once I started reading I had to carry on to the end.

It's not the first and probably won't be the last time I'm suckered into buying a book by the tagline, and the idea of a "red-ops" army sponsored team of serial killers let loose is a genuinely great one, but that's as far as it goes. The story built around that premise has been written for thirteen year old boys. I really wanted to enjoy this, but it took me less than a day to read it and less than an hour to realise it wasn't going to be a "keeper". Every character is a cliche, every set-piece a suspend-your-disbelief farce (I mean come on, as if one man could question then kill scores of people, one at a time, hour after hour, and hide the bodies in a toilet, while hundreds of others sat patiently outside suspecting nothing). Nothing that happens is realistic in any sense of the word and to be honest by the end I felt my intelligence was being insulted. Don't be surprised if this winds up being filmed because it reads pretty much like a film script, complete with square-jawed hero, plucky heroine, resourceful kid and even save-the-day domestic pet(s), but central theme apart, it would need a huge re-write to make even a half decent movie. If I'd bought "Afraid" at an airport bookshop, I'd have left it on the plane, don't waste your money.

Well I'm not one of the author's friends or peers, just an ordinary reader, and I thought this was a great read. I read through in almost a single sitting, the pace didn't let up, I was suitably horrified throughout, and the conclusion was exciting and satisfying. This is one of those stories where the individual ingredients are quite familiar, but the whole adds up to something original. In fact the premise of the book is one of those that is almost so obvious you can't believe no-one thought of it before, but as far as I know it's an original idea. I can accept that there are some scenes and some character behaviour that seem implausible, but the same can be said of so many other genre novels and films, and here it doesn't hurt the story, it's just a device to set up a horrific scenario and worked for me.

This isn't going to educate or elighten you, but you will be thoroughly entertained for the duration.
