This review is from: Schubert: Winterreise (Die Schone Mullerin) (Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau/ Alfred Brendel/ Andrįs Schiff) (Arthaus: 107523) [DVD] [2012] [NTSC] (DVD)
This two DVD set is a fine tribute to the are late great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and it is even more fitting when the works featured are those pinnacles of the German lieder tradition with which he will always be associated!
The earlier of these two DVD recordings, Winterrise, dates from 1979 and shows the great man in the fullness of his mature voice. His performance is quite traditional, some might even say conservative, he stands next to the piano and hardly moves, every ounce of the emotion in this music is communicated through the voice, with hardly anything shown on his face or body language. Indeed, there are occasions when Alfred Brendel seems to show more emotion than Fischer-Dieskau, but oh, what a voice! This is in contrast to the extra feature included on this disc, a 56 minute documentary, which shows Fischer-Dieskau and Brendel in rehearsal, the emotion literally pours forth!
Die schöne Müllerin was recorded some twelve years later at the 1991 Schubertiade when Fischer-Dieskau was coming to the end of his career, he would retire just over a year later at the end of 1992, and while his voice had lost a little of its richness, it is still a fine performance. And it is a real performance, it is interesting to compare both recordings here, while in Winterise his voice portrayed the emotion, in Die schöne Müllerin he gives a more animated performance and he really engages with the audience, it is as if he is making up for slight loss of the emotional edge to his voice by showing it in his performance. Despite this slight loss of emotional intensity in his voice, this is still a performance I would be more than happy to listen to, it has a real integrity that comes from age and experience, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was clearly an incomparable artist!
This disc has as an extra a documentary including an interview with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau recorded at the 1985 Schubertiade, and although quite interesting to watch, I can't imagine it would be something I came back to often!
This is a wonderful set, one which as I say above, is a fine tribute, and one which will grace any collection, highly recommended!

I like this box set very much, never had the chance to see him in the flesh, this is the next best thing. Recording quality fine.
