5.0 out of 5 stars More Bargain Evans, 18 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 120 Bill Evans' Essentials (Remastered Version) (MP3 Download)
Having reviewed the other bargain Evans mp3 compilation The Greatest Jazz Pianist of All Time (Songs Remastered) I feel I should also say something about this more modestly-entitled offering. Perhaps it is even more of a bargain, with 120 tracks for £2.99, as opposed to 47 for £2.49. Admittedly here, on more than 40 tracks, Evans is no more than a sideman to Tony Scott or Zoot Sims, and while I wouldn't want to suggest they are without interest, they are hardly central to a survey of Evans' work. You also get a good deal of `New Jazz Conceptions' and `On Green Dolphin Street' - genuine Evans albums, but early work that doesn't represent him at his absolute best. And, despite what another reviewer says, there's nothing here from Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue'. But the rest of it is among his very greatest work - which means some of the subtlest, most delicate, and most romantic piano jazz around.

In particular, this includes nearly all of his wonderful first collaboration with Jim Hall, 'Undercurrent'; the whole of 'Waltz for Debby' and 'Sunday Afternoon at the Village Vanguard', with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, generally regarded as his very best work, and possibly the greatest piano trio albums ever; most of 'Explorations' and 'Portrait in Jazz', (the other two albums with Motian and LaFaro); and other prime cuts from `How My Heart Sings', `Moonbeams', `Everybody Digs...' and `Interplay', with Jim Hall and Freddie Hubbard.

Here is a track listing with the albums they come from, where I have been able to ascertain them. An asterix indicates that the track is duplicated on `The Greatest Jazz Pianist of all Time', in case, like me, you bought that first. As before, if you know better, please comment with corrections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously cheap and first class, 8 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 120 Bill Evans' Essentials (Remastered Version) (MP3 Download)
At the price this is absurdly cheap. It includes the 2 CD set "A Day in New York" a great swinging album with Tony Scott, Clark Terry and others (spread out over the download. There is much of Evans' album with Jim Hall (a masterpiece) and selection from Kind of Blue with Miles. Some of his finest work is on this. Buy it quickly before Amazon realize what a bargain it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Evans Essentials, 23 Nov 2012

Certainly if you like Bill Evans this grouping of 120 tracks will contain a lot of gems. I have a resonable number of Bill's LPs and CDs and there are tracks I do not have.

A number are from the time before his most famous trio but there are some of those gems as well and for the current price of less than £6 makes it about 5p a track.

I didn't have many Bill Evans albums and they mostly consisted of solo works. There are a lot of those too in this excellent collection but also tracks from albums I'd never heard of. The tracks with Tony Scott and others from 'The Modern Art of Jazz' at the beginning are worth the price alone. Someone else on here has posted a list of albums the tracks come from, so it is relatively easy to find details.

I had recently bought a four CD box set by Bill Evans, but for £2.99 remastered as well over 10 lp's worth you simply cannot go wrong. make that 12 lp's worth or more. 25 pence a disc.

There is an unbelievable amount of great music here for the smallest of small change - my only complaint is the lack of information about what you are listening to; some of the tracks are immediately recognisable, others can be researched easily, but I'm lefdt with some that are totally baffling. But don't let this put you off, whichever way you look at it it's an incredible bargain.
