I usually sit and read reviews online before buying just about anything, but as soon as I got my 5S, my instinct took me to Tesco. Rookie mistake. Big time. That case cost me £8 and broke (literally came apart) within 4 months. Couldn't believe I effectively flushed £8 down the toilet like that.

Nonetheless, I just took delivery of this Melkco case. It's really solid, makes my phone slimmer than the synthetic junk I bought from Tesco and this one really wasn't that much more expensive. Fast and easy to delivery to my nearest Amazon Locker, I am very pleased to have bought this case. I last had a Melkco for my 4S and it too was superb. I still have that case too, almost in immaculate condition, despite the knocks and bumps it took over the course of two years.

I should add that a case to me doesn't need to look good. It's primary role is to protect a £600+ phone. I would be heartbroken if something happened to this phone as I now buy them direct from Apple, so as to avoid the hefty contract fees. So having a good protective case is important to me. Melkco has done well with this style of case. I just hope it protects the 5S for as long as I have it.

I have spent a considerable time researching iPhone 5s cases, including getting at least one that was less than satisfactory. My criteria were:
- covers and secures the phone
- sensible compromise between high protection against bumps / breakage and a slim, non-bulky design
- value for money
- elegant, functional, unfussy design and appearance
- ease of use / access to functions, buttons etc
- preferably in a natural material (eg leather)
- preferably available in black, to match all my other tech kit

This looks to be a superb case. It is well packaged (box was a little bashed though) and on opening, there is the unmistakeable small of real (not fake) leather. The iPhone 5s fitted safely, easily and snugly into the case. There appears to be no danger of it accidentally coming loose. The corner sections that fix the phone in the case and the closure seem to be secure enough, with no danger that they will damage the bezel of the phone, as others have reported. Dunno if this is luck, or they got part of a bad batch. It is remarkably slim, neat and does not add bulk.

The entire phone is completely and securely covered, except for
- the sleep/wake button and a small part of the `top' of the phone not protected by the closure of the case
- the section to one side for the ring/silent switch & volume buttons
- the headphone socket and speaker on the `bottom' of the phone

So - you will have to open the case in order to charge the phone (this is not a problem for me) and to take the phone out of the case in order to access the SIM card tray (hopefully not a regular occurrence anyway). One potential drawback is that the hinge between the case and the cover for the screen looks a little flimsy and might (as it works and loosens over time - it is leather) compromise the security of the closure, but I will see how that goes over time.

So a very enthusiatic ***** for now, but will report back in a few weeks.

Update on 2nd September 2014 - case still looks superb and still doing a great job. The hinge remains secure and so the review remains ***** :-)

I had one of these for my iphone 4 and was really pleased with my purchase and of the quality. Don't be put off by one reviewer saying that you cannot open and close the case with the headphone jack fitted, they really must have no common sense whatsoever!
All you have to do is slightly twist the cover to one side...Simples! Also don't be put off when you first take this case out of its packaging as it does look a tad flimsy, as soon as you fit the phone, which does fit very snugly, it looks very classy. Also, there is a very good reason that the cover does not have magnets or press studs, it's to stop the magnetized parts from affecting the phones signal and if the hook on top of the cover does not grip the phone tightly you can (very gently) bend it down a little further with a pair of small pliers.
This case really does ooze Quality and matches the Quality of the iphone very well indeed. A top class product and highly recommended.

Hope my review helps and thanks for taking the time to read it!

UPDATE:
In the time I have had this case Quite a few folk have commented on how nice this case looks and several have asked where I got it as they thought it looked the ''BIZ'' and wanted to buy one. Folk cannot believe how a phone case can look as good as these do and are amazed at the quality of the leather covering!
So go on buy one, you will not be disappointed, honest!

I have bought several Melkco Luxe Jacka cases for iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 through Amazon. Always superb, excellent quality leather and very stylish. Sadly, since the ios7 upgrades, the clock time is much larger and lower than it was originally on the screen, so the cases with the viewiing window which were my favourites, are no longer in the right place for viewing the time/who is calling etc without opening the case. Hopefully Melkco will upgrade the current design :-)

Have in the past always gone with Noreve cases but not available for iphone 5 at the time so got this one and no regrets. Well made case that fits phone well with good degree of protection. Gives added confidence against dropping when using camera as can hang on to the flap!

Excellent quality product.

Phone feels secure and protected. Had one of these for iPhone 4 and case still looks immaculate after 2 years usage. You pay a little more than for a plastic case, but hey don't spend £500+ on a phone and then cover it with a £2 case

I bought this case as my wife had bought a Melkco for her IPhone 4S and was really pleased with it. I'm happy to say this "Luxe" version lives upto expectations and is exactly what I was looking for.

First off the materials. The outer leather is soft and tactile but not so soft that it will easily scuff. It's reinforced front and back to provide plenty of protection for regular daily abuse. Inside the front cover is a soft velvet to keep the phone screen scratch free. One thing to mention is the outer leather isn't too shiny. I bought a case before this one which was a little too "bling" for my tastes. This one is spot on and ideal for a more businessy look. Stitching seems good and strong. The window is a great idea. It means you can see the time without opening the case by pressing the power button.

As far as fit, the Melkco is spot on again. It manages to grip the phone securely without being so tight that it could damage the phone edges. With the front closed you have full and easy access to the volume and vibrate buttons on the top left and the power button top right. With the case open you can easily get at the charging and speaker port at the bottom. The front folds back completely when using your phone and makes for a comfortable platform to hold.

If you're looking for a ruggedised "life-proof" type case then this one is not for you. However if you want a stylish, highly usable case that will keep your phone safe in a pocket or bag, I don't think you would be disappointed. It's not the cheapest case but you do get what you pay for. I've now bought my wife one as well to keep her new 5S safe. I'd definitely buy one again.

I have had this case in dark red which was great - it lasted and protected my phone.

I ordered an new case in vintage brown. It's not brown - orange or bright tan would be the description... Which is horrible!

I contacted the seller and he agreed the picture was misleading but just told me if I didn't like it I would just have to return it at my cost.

Needless to say I have bought a different case and this one is gathering dust...

I am so disappointed to be writing a negative review for this case because I love the colour, feel and look of the case. The problem is, I need an iphone case that protects my phone and yesterday when I dropped my phone for the first time since buying it (fortunately onto a carpet), the front of the case dropped open and the back even came off a little at the top. If it had been on a harder surface there could have been serious damage.
