3.0 out of 5 stars Great album you probably already own, maybe twice???
Yeah its a great album, though Im sure it hasn't been that long since it was last reissued. If like me you probably got this for the demo's and rareites which to be honest dont have the greatest sound quality. I know these are demos but compared to the peel sessions and live at the bbc, they sound like they have been taken from cassettes found hiding in guy chadwicks damp...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection perfectly packaged, 27 Nov. 2012
This review is from: The House Of Love (3CD Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
There is little that has not been written about the House of Love and their defining debut album. Suffice to say that their failure to match the profile and success of the groups which came before and after is one of the great mysteries. This (re-)release can be looked on in a number of ways - the quality of the original album, the value of the (copious) additional material and overall value for money.

As to the first, although the album featured neither the group's finest nor most famous songs it is perfectly-realised creation. Clocking in at barely half an hour, the album's force outweighs the sum of its ten individual parts and leaves one desperately wanting more while glad the group did not.

While some might baulk at the need for five versions of the seminal "Shine On" in the remaining 40 tracks, the House of Love always produced excellent B sides and sessions (see the Fontana B-sides compilation "A Spy In The House of Love" and the 21 track BBC release of the complete Peel Sessions which is an essential foil to the Deluxe re-issue). Half the tracks on offer here are demos and alternative versions never previously aired and even the most assiduous House of Lover will find new treasures here.

Finally, Deluxe is unbelievable value, all the more so given that the original album is currently out of print (as it were) while "1986-1988: the Creation Recording" (in essence the first 25 tracks on offer here minus the Bonus 7" demo offerings of "Shine On" and "Christine") currently retails for c£35.

While not as grandiose as the recent boxed sets of the "Velvet Underground & Nico" or "Blue Lines" (or, if truth be told, as ground breaking) this is a compulsory tribute to a classic album and unjustly neglected group. Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album by one of the best bands of their time, 30 Nov. 2012

Great album by one of the best indie bands of the late 80s. Captures the era perfectly, and at this price for 50 songs you really can't go wrong. Go on, buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A first album classic by a band who never sounded quite as dynamic ever again, 24 May 2013

Listening again to the House of Love's eponymous debut album took me right back to the late 80's when the UK music scene was going through a major transition. It was the height of "indie-dom", when small independent labels like Creation (who released the original version of this album) dominated new music, set the agenda, and made the major labels totally redundant. The Smiths had fallen apart, the baggy sound of Madchester was in fashion, and the dawn of Britpop was just around the corner. As a live act, on a good night, The House of Love could create a storm, especially when playing small venues like the Phil Kaufman Club. They brought together a contemporary blend of jangly 60's pop, echoey guitars, tight song-writing and hooks aplenty. There were elements of shoe-gazing, but with stronger and more defined song structures. Probably not the best of vocalists, Guy Chadwick nevertheless has a distinctive style, and was a fairly moody frontman with presence. Terry Bickers is something of an over-looked guitar talent. The album itself is possibly a little over-produced, but singles like Shine On and Christine are classics of the era. The additional material included with this re-issue is a mixed bag but a useful document of the time. Subsequent House of Love albums (released via major labels) were interesting but patchy, and the band never really followed up on their early promise.

If you're a fan from the first time around or a newcomer to the soundscape of the HOL you'll find something..... as it's all here!
As I know the songs inside out, I played cd3 first as there was more demo material on it which is always of interest.
The rest will take you straight back to the reverby guitars and vocals and the wall of sound which was their trademark. Go and treat yourself to bit of classic late 80's early 90's rock.......

I know these are demos but compared to the peel sessions and live at the bbc, they sound like they have been taken from cassettes found hiding in guy chadwicks damp shed for a quarter of a centry. To be fair I'd pay the asking price just for the few live tracks especially "i wanna be your dog". Nice packaging, shame no dvd.

If this is one of the UK's great lost guitar bands then I am still looking for them on the basis of this mixed bag of songs...
