5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly readable.
Whether you're new to the subject, or an aficionado of Everest literature, there's something for you in Mick Conefrey's new book on the 1953 Ascent of Everest.
This splendid book covers the story from the early reconnaissance expeditions, to the aftermath of the 1953 Ascent.
The contemporary controversy over the sensitive question of who actually stepped onto...

A good read, if a little disjointed in parts.

I had never really thought much about the first ascent of Everest - I was very young at the time. This book was very well written buliding up to the event and the after effects. I found that I could not put it down.

So many stories of this event, but this helps to put many into context, making you want to reread others. A good read.

An absolutely brilliant holiday read. I've read a lot of books on the subject of Everest but this one is so well researched bringing together strands from many team members. It really puts you there on the mountain and makes you realise how much of a team effort this was.

Got this for my husband, as he's a budding climber (climbed Kili a couple years ago), and he said it was a brilliant book.
He said it was brilliantly written - very impressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read if you want the true account, 8 Feb. 2013

Not a bad read in a documentary style. This covers off much of the myth and unpicks the nonsense surrounding who actually got there first - Hillary or Tenzing...? For me it was an exercise in clarifying the detail and recognising Hunt's management of the ascent but it didn't maintain much suspense or create a real sense of drama. This is essentially down to the documentary nature of the book rather than Conefrey's prose. Though having said that - books like Harrer's White Spider and Herzog's Annapurna manage suspense, drama and documentary - but I guess that's the first-person nature of their reportage.

Nonetheless - worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best of its genre, 15 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Everest 1953: The Epic Story of the First Ascent (Kindle Edition)
ok if you are into this kind of thing. Nothing new in the story for all it tries to play it that way, Not exiting and could have said what it does in 25% of the space, Dull in it's writing style poor on content buy worth the stars from a lover of the genre,

1.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable but not great, 13 Jan. 2013

The book was a little dissappointing concentrating too much on press rights to the ascent story. It also did not describe adequatelly the descent from the successfull summit bid. Lastly the author needs a good proof reader judging by the number of typo's I spotted
