This review is from: Diddley Daddy - The Collection (Audio CD)
This double CD contains all of the A and B sides from Bo Diddley's singles from the period 1955 to 1961, along with a selection of album tracks and other rarities. Thus, there are a couple of minor hits missing, these being You can't judge a book by its cover (from 1962) and Hey good looking (from 1965). If these specific tracks matter to you, they can be found on another double CD, The Story Of Bo Diddley: Very Best Of, which includes some of his later recordings.

The music is rooted in blues but most tracks have a rock'n'roll beat. One of the non-hits, Cops and robbers, features a spoken female voice, but she is not credited in the booklet. That booklet provides the basic Bo Diddley story, discussing not only his early life and his own career, but also his influence via cover versions and his general sound and style.

In 1960, Bo recorded a very distinctive cover of Sixteen tons, Tennessee Ernie Ford's classic song. It is included here on the second CD, but is not included on The Story Of Bo Diddley: Very Best Of. He was invited to sing it on Ed Sullivan's TV show but sang his own self-titled song instead and was given a lifetime ban from the show.

There is much to like about Bo Diddley's music. Rock'n'roll music was a very broad spectrum, with the country-influenced Everly Brothers at one end and Bo Diddley's bluesy music at the opposite end. Both made important contributions to popular music in their different ways.

If you enjoy bluesy rock'n'roll, or even think you might enjoy it, Bo Diddley is your man.
