4.0 out of 5 stars Very rare curiosity!
"Variety Girl" is an amusing comedy with a Hollywood background, in which Mary Hatcher and Olga San Juan try to make their breaks into the movie world via Paramount Studios, and in the process bump up against every star on the lot at the time!

"Variety Girl" is an amusing comedy with a Hollywood background, in which Mary Hatcher and Olga San Juan try to make their breaks into the movie world via Paramount Studios, and in the process bump up against every star on the lot at the time!
Olga San Juan is a good comedienne, and a scene in which she impersonates Bette Davis is hilarious (even by 1947 her mannerisms were well enough known to be lampooned). Mary Hatcher is attractive enough, and sings in the Kathryn Grayson soprano style, but sadly there was only room for one brunette singer of this type in Hollywood at the time, and that was Ms Grayson, so Mary Hatcher quickly faded from view.

Of course the main reason to watch is to see the stars, most have only brief bits apart from Bing Crosby and Bob Hope who feature quite prominently. The lovely Dorothy Lamour has the show's best number, "Talahassee", which is a duet between her and of all people Alan Ladd!

This is again a very rare movie, not available anywhere else in the world, and its release to DVD is splendid, the print used is excellent quality and the distributors, Simply Media, are to be congratulated. Let's hope they will release more titles from Paramount's golden years - how long do we have to wait for Dorothy Lamour's jungle epics to appear?? Recommended without reservation for lovers of Hollywood!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining comedy with a number of famous cameos, 22 Feb 2013

It takes a while for the film to get going, so be patient, but once it does, it is very entertaining in a rather innocent and almost "home-made" fashion. The stars (there are a number of them playing themselves) do their thing effortlessly and with flair; from Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in a song and dance number to Alan Ladd (!) playing completely against type by crooning away while doing a little shuffle, to Pearl Bailey in an awesome blues number. The underlying story (2 young hopefuls in Hollywood) is cute and inconsequential; the draw of this movie is watching a number of real professionals turning up in various scenes and thoroughly enjoying their cameos.

A None talented starlet wannabe Amber la Vonne is mistaken for her friend,Catherine Brown who is beautiful and a talented singer.this film has all star studded cast, of stars like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, Gary Cooper,Barbara Stanwick,Veronica Lake, Burt Langcaster,STERLING Hayden, they must be every star of paramount who pops up, for a comedy scene,a song our just a walk on bit. there's some good musical numbers by Pearl Baileys,Spike Jones and his City Slickers, and Alan Ladd sings a song with Dorothy Lamour, and there's a scene from a Pupete toons of Romeow and Juliacat. i've read this scene should be in technicolor but its b/w ,this is one good hilarious comedy musical film.dont miss it -great picture and sound quality no extras. in black/ white region 2.

This movie is worth 5 stars only because of Olga San Juan.....she is hilarious. It's also fun to see all the stars from Paramount Studios. It's recommended if you like 40's movies with lots of Hollywood stars in cameo appearances. My kind of movie.
