Update 6 months on: Stick by everything below. Worth the extra money.

Having sufferred 2 years with the Samsung G£$@xy S 1, I decided I wanted a phone that did what I asked of it. Having loved my MacBook and then tried out my Wife's old 3GS for a month, I decided to take the plunge and shell out for an iphone5.

Admittedly, the iOS 6 user interface isn't as feature laden as Android. HOWEVER - from my and my Family's experience of Android - this disadvantage is far outweighed by the fact that iOS 6 actually does what you ask it to. No recurrent refusal to connect to 3G, no daily crashes, no sending SMS messages to random people - it just works.

Mobile internet (I'm in central Scotland) is lightning. The speed I used to get (from day 1) with my Galaxy S 1 is incomparable.

The iCloud is a fantastic resource. Having shunned the idea for years, I now keep an electronic diary on my phone which automatically updates the one on my MacBook and vice versa. I find it much more reliable that the Google Calendars that run through Android.

One of the main things that seems to stop Android phones from working properly is having lots of Apps which apparently start interfering with each other. I have had over 40 on my phone for the last 3 months (long after my Galaxy S 1 started to malfunction) and it hasn't crashed once. Albeit it's a different product, to give an example of the quality of Apple merchandise, I've had a MacBook for 5 years and it's never crashed.

I don't agree with the complaints regarding "feeling cheap". This iphone is a lot lighter than previous models but I think that should be considered a very good thing. The screen is a thing of beauty - well sized and with incredibly vivid, intense colours.

Sure it's expensive but - when compared to my experience of Android (Samsung in particular) - it's a definite case of "you get what you pay for".

Overall, I'm really impressed with my iPhone 5. I've had it for just over a week after upgrading from the 4S and its performing brilliantly. I do think Apple made a few mistakes with this phone, but ultimately the 5 is easily the best iPhone I've owned.

PROS:

1. The design - iPhone 5 feels unbelievably light and slim when fitted into your hand. It's nowhere near as bulky as previous iPhones and thats something you really feel
2. The screen - iPhone 5's display is just amazing. I have an iPad 3 with retina display, and I can honestly say that this display is clearer and more vibrant
3. The speed - So far, every single app I've run on my iPhone 5, from Mail to Cut the Rope, has loaded and worked noticeably quicker than the 4 and 4S iPhones

CONS:

1. The back - the shiny new smooth panel on the back of the iPhone 5 scratches instantly. This is a problem you can easily prevent by fitting a case, but I found mine scratched just by slipping it into my jeans without one fitted
2. The size - though it still fits comfortably in my hand, the iPhone 5's new height makes reaching controls on the top of the screen quite fiddly
3. The Lightning Connector - Sure, this works well, but now I have to buy an expensive adapter so that my iPhone 5 will fit ANY of my 4S accessories?! WTF Apple...

Extremely disappointing. Came on time but touchscreen completely broken. Black and grey lines running down screen and entire device unresponsive. Wouldn't even allow me to turn it off.
Extremely misleading product description. Furious at waste of time and effort needed to repackage and resend.

I bought the iphone 5 as upgrade from iphone 4s and what a mistake. While iphone 4s had the best and most reliable signal quality among mobile phones in general the iphone 5 is anything but. Dropped phone calls, poor signal and very inconsistent performance as a phone. Very disappointing and it seems apple has gone back to their old tricks when released iphone 4 prematurely only to replace it by iphone 4s in less than a year later to rectify signal problems, it seems we are looking for the same kind of drama with iphone 5. So wait for iphone 5s

I love the iPhone 5. There are so many great apps for it and I use it to help me with many day-to-day tasks as well as for communication and recreation. It is simple to use and the layout is nice.

I have an iPhone 5 and have had no problems . The phone is lighter and better than 4s . The reason I have only given 3 stars is that a relative of mine has had to replace his iPhone 5 twice because of software problems . Each time he has had to have another new one . This particular one I bought for a relative in Southern Ireland and through Amazon was able to have it sent straight there . Unfortunately her one also had a software problem from brand new and thus a saga started . It appears Apple has very little presence in Southern Ireland and getting it replaced was a nightmare . Apple offered to replace phone with a rebuilt one which I thought was very bad after sales . Cut a long story short I had to in affect pay for another new one to be delivered to my relative and they picked up her broken new one . It took a further week or so to then get this second lot of money returned to my account . Don't get me wrong I love Apple products but their after sales left a lot to be desired from such a big company .

As a vivid apple fan (I own an iPhone 5, iPad 3rd and a iMac) I have to say this was not as good as I hoped it would be. It is still a very good phone, but not a very good Apple if you know what I mean. Although the screen is a lot taller, 4 inches, it doesn't quite seem right with the width. Also, my battery life isn't that good, I have to charge it every day! But I guess that's with all smartphones. If the iPhone had an Android Gingerbread system, it would be alright, but its only the iOS that Apple is selling. Buy a Sony Xperia S or a HTC One X.
