A great soundtrack to a great film. I bought the album mainly for the 'love theme', which remains a highlight but the whole album is excellent listening and listening to it in osolation confirms how well it complimented the film - as indeed film music should do.

With it's lack of film material on the cover and pocket friendly price, Filmophone's presentation of Alex North's score for Stanley Kubrick's 'Spartacus', appears to be the work of yet another company flooding the market-place with public domain material they have carelessly transferred from well worn vinyl. Think again. This is a very decent sounding remaster free of both distortion and stylus noise. The liner notes do not detail from whence 'Spartacus' has been sourced but Filmophone's web site states that most of their presentations are LP transfers. There are other editions available, but these I believe are augmented with unreleased material and command a hefty price tag.
For the uninitiated, 'Spartacus' is one of best soundtracks I have ever heard. And I've heard literally thousands. It has all the thundering percussion one demands to hear in a sword and sandal epic, as well as a gorgeous, and I do mean gorgeous, love theme that once heard is never to be forgotten.
Alex North, whose compositions include 'Unchained Melody' and the ground breaking score for 'A Streetcar Named Desire', was a rare composer in that he seemed to be able to move effortlessly between genres, both a modernist and a classicist, equally at home with jazz musicians and an orchestra. As Jerry Goldsmith said, "Of all of us, he's the master."

Yes great! This is vintage Alex North. Comes complete with mini booklet with some interesting notes. I've given it four because of the source material used. The selections are about as good as one can expect for about 74 minutes. Only problem is the sound suffers a bit from extraction from the original master tapes, however, this serves to confirm its authenticity.

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS ITEM FOR A LONG TIME AND RECENTLY ACQUIRED A COPY VIA AMAZON SURREY,ENGLAND,DEALERSHIP. FOR SPARTACUS FREAKS THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING ADDITION TO OUR COLLECTIONS. THE ONLY GRIPE IS I WISH THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK HAD BEEN INCORPORATED,WHICH WOULD HAVE LENDED SOME CONTINUITY...THE BOOKLET WAS QUITE USEFUL,BUT OPINIONATED,FOR EXAMPLE,THE COMMENTS ON THE CHARACTER VARINIA. SURELY THE PIECE ABOUT THE GLADIATORIAL DUEL BEING SHOT TO MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT,WAS THIS REALLY CORRECT?? THAT'S A REAL POSER FOR KUBRICK FANS.OVERALL - AN EXCELLENT BUY,AND THANKS TO THE WEB,VERY REASONABLE PRICING..
