Can a short story be too long? A lot are surely too short, but this one, for me, was the other way.
Sam, a scientist, finds a hole under his sofa which takes in anything fed to it, seemingly forever and to nowhere.
Is it a black hole? A gateway to God? Everyone initially wants to know.
The story is basically good - it starts well and provides some interesting discussion points. The science background while necessary was perhaps a little too detailed, and I found the necessary back story around Sam's now dead partner a little clinical. When his current work was introduced it seemed a little out of the blue and almost as if there was no way for the story to go. There was though much to think about and perhaps this makes this a good choice for a book club meeting?
For me, it had some good ideas, and I basically enjoyed it, but I did find it a bit long and cumbersome, and that's why it drops from 4 to 3 stars in my measure.
