I've never been a great lover of physchedelia. I was in my youth but now when you listen to it on the whole it is twee, exceedingly indulgent and badly played. Fortunately some bands were capable of delivering the goods (sons of champlin, cold blood, ab sky, madura etc) mainly because they didn't wallow in hippy dippy philosophy and kept things tight and sweet. Bubble Puppy are one such band from Texas playing a (mostly) 4-5 minute melodic rock playing full use of twin guitar way before Wishbone Ash. They had a hit with the rather mudane 'sassafras' which is okay but nothing exceptional nevertheless even the weaker tracks are far superior to the dead and the doors drop on our unsispecting heads. Bubble puppy are BRILLIANT musicians, very tight and the drummer is busy! busy! busy! lot's of nifty jazz fills and the vocal harmonies are spot on. Suggestion? stick on 'i've got to reach you' eight minutes of fantastic guitar duelling way before 'free bird'. So they look complete twerps on the cover, but this is 1969. Note they then became a band called Damien making one very hard to find and not on c.d (as far as i know) but great album even if they repeat a note for note remake of 'todd's tune' on it! making the excessive cost and twenty eight minutes playing time off putting. I think they changed their name again and made an album with 'rocknroll' in the title which i'm told is awful. I hear they've reformed as Bubble puppy..or is it damien. Buy this!
