5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into this classic band, 20 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A quality release providing a warts and all overview of Saxon's history. featuring interviews with all members apart form Pete Gill this is similar in style I suppose to the Anvil documentary, if a lot happier as Saxon has continued to release quality product. A second disc of live stuff etc makes this excellent value for money.

Whether a die hard or casual fan, this is a really good place to understand Saxon

5.0 out of 5 stars thunderous crusade of NWOBHM legends, 30 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
watch the movie and plenty of extras that go with it you wont be disappointed, the movie charts career of the band - mostly the era of oliver/dawson (fine by me),backed up with archive footage from all eras, and contributions from the likes of lemmy, fast eddie to name but two, the film never gets boring - well put together.
The extras, IN CONCERT 1981 taken off german tv beat club, the band plays most of the classics of the era 747,dallas1pm etc,
you cant go wrong that.
ST GEORGES DAY 2008 live in london well performed, a mix of old classics and newer stuff
BUILDING THE LABYRINTH, ON A CRUSADE, NO EXCUSES all good "fly on the wall"stuff
THE EAGLE AND THE BOMBER, a documentary reuniting saxon and motorhead from the good old days of the late 70"s,brought bang up to date, plenty of lemmy & biff remembering the bomber tour.
Even a little cameo of nibs carters nipper interviewing his dad backstage (at wacken-i think) in germany.
Only two criticisms - no track listing on the sleeve or the booklet, but if you are nuts about saxon then it wont matter. And no interview with pete gill (although nigel glockler makes up for it).

5.0 out of 5 stars KILLER BAND, KILLER BOX SET..., 8 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A true institution of the british hard / heavy rock, Saxon finally wins his documentary recounting his path. Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie comes with tasty extras. Like Kissology, Led Zeppelin DVD and The History of Iron Maiden series, the box set brings many rarities and a one real treasure, in 5 hours material. First I will talk about the main documentary contained on Disc 1 of the box. Produced and directed by competent hands and experts in british heavy rock whit sober and concise comments stamped by some figures from the world of heavy metal as Lemmy and Lars Ulrich. Many rare footage of the early days of the band are shown in the documentary, including some footage of Bomber Tour 1979 when they were the opening band Motorhead. The film continues with many backstage dramas as the mysterious departure of Pete Gill, the contract for the first disc, pressure from record companies to make the sound more comercial, the resignation of Steve Dawson and Graham Oliver and decline in the late 80. But shows some twists in his career as the resurrection after the release of Dogs of War and after the presentation in several editions of The Wacken Open Air Festival. Other known figures comment on friendship with vocalist Biff Bifford as Fast Eddie Clark, Phil Campbell, as well as the vital testimony of own Dawson and Oliver. Still, Biff has several stories over the years of constant touring and concerts. Do not want to be accused of "spoiller" therefore does not deliver the gold. A curiosity is that Pete Gill do not give his testimony about his years in the band's drum kit. A shame. Well, the documentary is very good. The disk 2 accommodates the real treasure of the band, the concert broadcasted on German TV program Beat Club in 1981. A true one hour relic. Also brings videos of the recording sessions of Crusader and Innocence is No Excuse albuns in 84/85. In addition to this material, brings a competent show at the opening of a theater in London in 2008 and a detailed description of the 1979 tour with Motorhead. A single defect persists in this box set. The UDR company dont rescues the lost VHS Nottinghan's 1983 of the Power and Glory Tour in 1983, which would be a fine material, which would further complete the work, as well as presenting on BBC tv Top Of The Pops, which was not released on any of dvds released by the band. The only absence was the VHS Live 1983 but the material on the DVD is great. But it could be excellent. Finally, the show at the Beat Club in 1981 already pays the DVD, being an indispensable and obligatory item for true fans of the band and heavy metal in general. Shows a cohesive band, with heavy and melodic technique of NWOBHM period. The concert brings the presence of drummer Pete Gill with a set of songs from the first disc, through the excellent Wheels of Steel by Strong Arm of the Law. Featured one powerful presentation of Frozen Rainbow and Dallas 1 pm, plus classics like Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of The Law, 747 Strangers in the Night and Machine Gun. Along with Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, Saxon has also become synonymous of NWOBHM, and one of the most important groups of the movement. And they remain firm, strong and melodic. And probably will remain so for another 20 years. Buy quickly, buy now.
