5.0 out of 5 stars Kate Bush's fantastic 1979 stage-show is a must for all fans
For those of use who woe not having seen Kate Bush live on stage (pretty impossible since 1979, when she stopped touring), this is perhaps the next best thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars VHS Quality
While its great to see a full Kate Bush concert on DVD (to an extent!) the quality is terrible - looks like a straight VHS transfer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate Bush's fantastic 1979 stage-show is a must for all fans, 6 Feb 2001
For those of use who woe not having seen Kate Bush live on stage (pretty impossible since 1979, when she stopped touring), this is perhaps the next best thing.
The songs covered are from her first two album releases, The Kick Inside and Lionheart, plus Violin, which would appear on 1980's Never For Ever. Each and every song is performed brilliantly in terms of dance, mime and spectacular visuals, each particular to the song in question.
Given the sheer amount of preparation required for each show (KB directed and choreographed all her concerts) and the physical element involved, it's perhaps not surprising that she quit touring after suffering from acute exhaustion and the level of expectation heaved upon her following her '79 tour. Subsequent to this, she preferred to express her music through videos as opposed to touring, making the odd TV appearance to promote her occasional singles.
Having said that, KB certainly appears to be enjoying herself during this Hammersmith performance, with the KT Bush Band giving excellent support to her ever-flourishing vocals, which are almost pitch-perfect throughout. In fact some of the live versions of her songs almost surpass the studio perfomances. The accompanying CD is in fact an exact audio rendition of the video, but is still a great addition anyone's KB collection.
All in all, this is the perfect document for an artist approaching the peak of her powers, and we can only ponder at what might have been if she had continued to tour in the years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 29 Aug 2010
Just to clarify the content on this DVD. It collects both the BBC's 1979 Christmas Special and the 'Live at Hammersmith' performances. The transfer is very good in quailty with only a split-second glitches in two numbers that I could find.

It's nice to have this material available again, in one place. Wish someone would bring together Kates other video work in one place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate in '79 - Stunning !, 29 July 2010

As one of her singles says,'Wow!'...been awaiting this on DVD for YEARS having played the VHS 'Kate Bush at Hammersmith Odeon' to death....(and no longer having a VHS player...) amazing EMI haven't capitalised on this. Anyway, this ISN'T the Hammersmith Odeon concert.. it's rather better, with addition tracks like 'Here Comes the Flood'...'December will be Magic Again' 'The Wedding List', and 'Egypt' - otherwise it's much the same as the London gig. You have to see this to realise how revolutionary this stage show was in l979...I remember sitting near the front and was lost for words at the choreography and sound - no idea where this was recorded.. looks as if some at Hammersmith...some elsewhere...but it hangs together well. If you've seen the Hammersmith VHS, you'll know what to expect from 'The Man with the Child in his Eyes' through to 'Oh England, my Lionheart and 'Wuthering Heights'.....but the 'extra' tracks make it an extra delight! SO glad I can now 'preserve' this ! Its memories are irreplaceable....as is the performance - if you've forgotten just how brilliant this girl was , watch this...and be dazzled. She only made the one tour....and the material here has never been bettered. No information on the packaging about where it was recorded....or the musicians....but just be grateful SOMEBODY has put these gems together on one DVD...NO reservations...5 stars PLUS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally available, but somethings wrong here., 31 Dec 2010

I'm glad to have bought this DVD but I'm convinced this is a homemade collection. It's a mix of the xmas special and the tour. The quality is at best on a par with good VHS but never as ropey as Youtube. It works, the sound is great and as far as I know this is the only way to get a DVD of young Kate live.
Even though it's of questionable legality and no real presentation, I am very very glad I bought this. I accept the picture quality is dated (being kind there) but I love the sound, no polish or over production. Just so glad to have an acceptable copy of these live songs. No more Youtube conversions. This is all on Youtube but the quality here is much better.
So long as you accept the old school picture quality and lack of flashy menus/options etc then this can't be recommended highly enough for any true fan. Especially as there's no other means of getting even this quality. Seen the old live VHS (had it years ago) for bonkers money on ebay.
The musicians deserve a mention. It must have been a pinnacle of their careers to play with Kate. They're as good as she is. It's all sounds amazingly well played, and obviously the same goes for the singing.
James And The Cold Gun live just never gets boring...

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good footage, some not as good, 23 Aug 2010
By
Denise Marchand (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
What's good: Clips from a TV special where the images are nice and clear. These are some of the early performances mentioned in the recently released bio on Bush, Under the Ivy. What's not so good: Poor quality to the Tour of Life footage (and the old video proved there is good, clear footage out there). Still, better than nothing given the dearth of product showing Bush in performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!!, 12 Jan 2001
Wow, Kate Bush is a woman of many talents, and that shows on this breathtaking video of her live show!! Each song has its own story, and she proves that she is an amazing singer and dancer. A very interesting and unique viewing experience, which make fantastic songs such as 'James and the cold gun' and 'Violin' look better than ever! An added cd album is always a bonus :) . The only problem is it leaves you wanting more!! Recommended to any Kate Bush fan, you will not regret!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kate Bush - Performance DVD, 14 Dec 2010
This DVD seems to be a compilation of two different performances, the first including guest appearnces from Peter Gabriel and the second (I think) from Kate Bush's only tour around 1979. The image quality especially of the second section isn't that great although the sound is OK - it looks like it's just been copied from VHS to DVD without any effort to re-master, which is a shame as the performances although looking a little dated are still great to see especially as there is so little Kate Bush material available on DVD. Had the DVD been supplied with sleeve notes and in better quality it would probably rate as 5*****'s but most fans will probably look beyond the poor quality and enjoy the brilliant songs and unique talent that is Kate Bush. Hopefully in the future these performances will be properly re-mastered, re-packaged and re-released officially but for now this DVD is still worth watching.

I attended this concert way back in 1979, what a truly memorable experience. This video certainly shows what a fantastic performance Kate gave, her energy and enthusiasm have to be seen to be believed, what a star!
