This 3hr (6 episode) series is not a substitute for Frozen Planet but if you enjoyed that and are hungry for more then this is a good SD prequel by the legendary Sir David Attenborough. It covers Antarctica only (so no Polar Bears!) but there is plenty of interest: Emperor penguins, leopard and elephant seals, albatrosses etc. The 6th episode covers exploration of the region, life for scientists living there and the making of the series.

First shown in 1993 it is not widescreen but the quality is nevertheless good and you can always zoom in a bit. There is also a BBC book to accompany the series:Life in the Freezer: Natural History of the Antarctic

Recommended if you have a particular interest. The title is also available as part of The Life Collection: David Attenborough (24 Disc BBC Box Set) [DVD] [1990]

A definite plus to the more recent Frozen Planet is DA's own interesting and insightful commentary - rather than the excited hyperbole he is forced to recite these days.

Loved watching the series on TV so it has been great to re-live it all. It is certainly well worth a second viewing.
