5.0 out of 5 stars For those who want to know what is beyond the next island, 2 Sep 2013
This is clearly a book for surfers or non-surfers. It is for those searching the undiscovered perfect wave, but also for those who always want to know what is around the next corner (be it behind the next island or over the next hill). I consider myself to be the latter having done a fair bit of roughing it around the globe, always curious to see what lies beyond the horizon and loved reading this story. Travel expectations are not always met 100% and this book portrays that reality which is what makes life and this book interesting. It goes well beyond travelogue, asking those tricky questions of how to balance a "settled life" with your explorer spirit be it through surfing, exploring one step beyond the obvious, or even sitting through horrendous bus rides.
The book is sprinkled with sometimes fleeting encounters with quirky characters without boring the reader with unnecessary details. I found this book a very pleasant read - guts and all: honest, soul-searching and ponderous at times, with regular touches of humor that remain on the right side of over the top. Recommended reading for a weekend away - just the right length for those who presently don't have time to sit around for weeks on sunny deck in the tropics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Island Explorer, 17 Mar 2013
This review is from: Island Explorer: Surfing, Sailing and Exploring beyond Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands (Kindle Edition)
Even a land-locked couch potato like me is familiar with the surfer's quest for the perfect wave and can get some vicarious thrill from this story of the author's search through the islands of Indonesian on such a quest before many of the places he went became well known in the surfing world. As someone who likes to know a little bit about a lot of things, even things I'm unlikely to ever do, the surfing part of the story was interesting, entertaining, and even educational. Beyond the surfing adventure, there were plenty of lessons to be learned from Scheffler's experience about life's tradeoffs (sacrificing in one area of life to meet goals in another), the balance of work and play, and an inspiration for those of us who dream about quests of our own.

I'm a big fan of Tom Anderson's surf-travel books - 'Riding the Magic Carpet' etc - so I thought I would give this one a go. It certainly got off to a good start, and although I've had to put it aside for a bit while work takes over (don't you hate it when that happens), it's definitely worth a look if this is your thing.
