4.0 out of 5 stars A great album with a poorly constructed tracklist.
I first heard of Gary Clark Jr due to very frequent, persistent but never tiring promoting of said artist by Epiphone. Clark uses Epiphone Archtop guitars and due to his sucess Epiphone has plastered him all over their newsletters. I am glad they did. I sampled his work by purchasing the Bright Lights E.P. and liked his sound quite alot. After that, I got my hands on the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disjointed album and doesn't do him justice
Having seen GCJ live in summer 2012 i couldn't wait for this album to be released. Unfortunately it doesn't live up to what I saw and felt that night I saw his live set. I found the album disjointed and feel he's trying to be too many things to too many people. There's far too many genres crammed into it and in my opinion he needs to stick to what he's amazing at...blues...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hendrix he isn't, 27 May 2013

But it's early days I guess. A couple of outstanding tracks in my opinion (Bright lights (which is why I bought it after hearing the track on Planet Rock) and When my train pulls in) and two or three good ones but the rest blur into mediocrity. Having said that, horns and organs don't really float my boat so..........like everything in life, it boils down to indivual taste. Certainly one to try and listen to before you buy it.

Gary Clark is unique despite the genre of his music being blues/rock, inevitable comparisons will be made with old school artists who we all love, but Gary Clark is his own man and he is fresh and creative. You will hear new things with every play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of styles, 1 Mar 2013

From the Black Keysey "Numb" to the Hendrix track " third stone from the sun", from the hip hoppy "Black and Blu" to the falsetto "please come home" There's something for everyone on here. This guy can play guitar all right, has a great voice and he writes some decent songs in a variety of styles so the isn't a duff track on here. My one concern would be that this variety may mean the "purist" is disappointed but that would be their loss. Ok it is predominantly to the soul side of the blues rather than downright gritty but if this introduces some young fans to the genre (my teenage daughter loves the album) then this has to be a good thing.

2.0 out of 5 stars The future of the blues?????, 23 Mar 2013

I always judge an album on 1st listen. The first track sets a beat that the others will follow. After the first 4 tracks i have no idea what this album is meant to be. Is that its charm that i have yet to find? Classic Rock gave it 10/10 so i naively followed. After 3 listens i still cant get that this is the saviour of the blues. It goes from great to good to whats that this! Still dont get what the fuss is all about. Some good tunes but..................

I bought this cd after reading a review in Classic rock magazine,a magazine who's opinions i really respect. They gave it 10/10 which i think is being generous. If like me your expecting a pure blues cd you'll be disappointed.I think he's trying to cover to many genre's but when he gets it right its very good.Best tracks are When my train pulls in,Bright lights,Third stone from the sun/if you love me like you say and Next door neighbour blues. (VERY GOOD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Accomplished and alive, 28 Feb 2013

This is an exceptional album. Echoes of Hendrix, 60's classic guitar and the sound of soul make this a massively accomplished debut. The guitar playing is clever, dynamic and in keeping with the element of blues that permeates throughout the album. Gary has a great voice and has written class songs and when you add in his guitar work and ability to structure a blues orientated rock and roll theme you begin to realise what a talent this man is. A real class act that deserves global recognition in a world full of mediocrity and hollow TV inspired but not very talented `reality' blandness.
