4.0 out of 5 stars Not his finest work, but good fun nonetheless
If you have seen every Woody Allen movie in the past decade, then the way this one goes will be no surprise. If you've not seen them, then this one may inspire you to see them. It's a typical Allen scenario - two young couples face challenges to their relationships when they find themselves in romantic climes. In one case, the mix is complicated by a comic muddle over the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite
He is such a great filmmaker! Sadly this is not in my opinion one of his best, its saving grace are the beautiful pictures of Rome. I suppose if you look at his huge body of work there is bound to be some disappointments this if one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming madcap farce!, 15 Dec. 2014

This can best be described as a romantic farce, a real soufflé of a film that is light-hearted and full of tongue-in-cheek humour. The city of Rome, beautifully filmed, is a sumptuous background against which the attractive cast play the madcap plot to the hilt, not least the opera house scenes in which the tenor sings in the shower ... on stage! In truth, I'm not a great lover of farce, but this one has a lot of charm, and I shall certainly pull the DVD off the shelves from time to time, and watch it again armed with a glass or two of Italian wine to heighten the mood.

As always, the latest Woody Allen film was deemed to be not as good as ANNIE HALL, not as funny as SLEEPER etc etc etc. Then a friend who's not a movie buff said that she really enjoyed it. And why not? It's laugh out loud funny, the three plotlines aren't random (there is an underlying theme) and the cast are as good as you could want.. Set expectations lower than "masterpiece" and you'll have a much more enjoyable 100 minutes than a lot of better received films.

Four stories set in one, humour, great story telling and great acting all round. Absolutely loved this movie - Midnight in Paris and this movie, To Rome with Love, his last 2 movies and he's creating the best movies of his career.

Worth seeing for the views of Rome.
As Alec Baldwin says on the dvd extra features, paris and london and even new york
have nice parts but all of Rome is nice. The actors all played interesting characters
but the subtitles when italian was spoken made it a bit hard to keep up at times
with the dialogue.Three or four different stories going on in the film makes it a bit disjointed
and one story would have been better.

I love his work - but this isn't anywhere near his best - scrappy, episodic and a little facile - but who cares. Moderate Allen is still far superior to UK slush muck as in Quartet....

5.0 out of 5 stars To Rome with lots of Love, 30 Dec. 2012
This review is from: To Rome With Love [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
This is a declaration of love to the eternal city. To Rome with Love saves me the agony of travelling there, the sheer beauty of Rome is brought to me.
A lot of the dialogue is in Italian and there are no subtitles. Not to worry, take it easy, relax and feel like a tourist in this most beautiful of cities. It is not important what actually is being said, it is rather more expressions of feelings. It may even work to your advantage, if you do not speak Italian at all.
But you may, as I did, once in a while catch the word "famoso" or something in that direction: this is clearly a motif in the film, being famous or notorious, or not wanting to be any of the two.
This film is about love, lust and temptations, which you give in to, or not, in all kinds of stereotype, Roman ways.
There seems, however, to be an undercurrent of: natural love and lust being threatened by un-natural lust for fame and notoriety.
For some reason there is a doppelganger , too, who tries in wain to fulfill his job as a mentor and father figure for a young man who has fallen prey to a temptress, as young men do.
It is all very entertaining and delightfull, and the tiniest bit worrying. See this film, if you need light in midvinter and vitamins for your soul.
Bodil Marie - in The Mood.
P.S.: the music , I find, supports the theme: Puccini.

Beautifully filmed - what's not to like about Rome?! Some of the strands seemed to unravel, but it was worth buying for the beautiful photography. The short documentary was interesting.
