Discover free food from urban spaces, countryside and coast with expert forager Dr Paul Chambers. The book covers more than a hundred of the most common edible plants, flowers and seaweeds, from agrimony ("does not make for good eating but does produce a pleasant herbal infusion") to yarrow ("extracts from the plants have been shown to repel certain species of malarial mosquito"), each with identification tips (including clear photographs) and collecting tips plus its historical, cultural and medicinal uses. A useful and practical field guide to what the author considers is "a fun and practical hobby that is ideally suited to the modern world".

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, 4 Dec 2011
This is a book that I am looking forward to putting into practice next year, as I live in the country this could not only save me money but, increase my knowledge and benefits of the plants growing in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable and informstive, 17 Aug 2011
The glossy pages don't immediately make this feel like a usable guide, and some of the writing is less than inspirational but this is an admirably clear and informative book that any forager would benefit from reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, 16 Oct 2014

This review is from: Foraging: Discover Free Food from Fields, Streets, Gardens and the Coast (Kindle Edition)
Bought the kindle version.

Book begins with an introduction to foraging and some basic advice on where, where not to forage.

Book is broken down into sections....Garden, Hedgerows, Woodland etc.... each plant comes with a description, history, and some recipes to be used with them. They also come with an illustration of the plant.

Only criticism is that some of the illustrations are distant shots, or partial shots not really showing the plants detail making it hard to match the illustration to an actual plant, also on the kindle version the illustration can sometimes be 3 or 4 pages past the description.

Overall happy with the purchase

This could have been better. Some mistakes and not enough on identifying 'more pictures' needed and better recipe layout. But not too bad

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of the class, 1 Aug 2014
I did love this book. I've read many foraging books but the author Paul Chambers has very cleverly constructed this book to lead you from one area to another, describing what you'll find in each rather than an encyclopedic volume of plants, you have a guide to forage.
The foraging calender at the back of the book is worth twice the cover price alone.
