4.0 out of 5 stars high point for martha
i didn't really know what to expect from this album by a former james brown backing singer was it going to be the bump and grind of classic funk era brown. what you actually get is a great soul album with a touch of funk, she emerges from the shadow of the soulbrother no.1 to forge her own identity. i was particularly impressed by the funky 'never never love a married...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some cracking tunes but ...
I love Speedometer & have all their albums and this has the usual great, tight musicianship on it as I've come to expect from them & I enjoy all of the songs on it
BUT
I'm only giving it 3 stars. Why?:
1) It's basically an album of covers. Some I've heard of & some I haven't. With the ones I have heard of, these versions don't sound radically different to...

i didn't really know what to expect from this album by a former james brown backing singer was it going to be the bump and grind of classic funk era brown. what you actually get is a great soul album with a touch of funk, she emerges from the shadow of the soulbrother no.1 to forge her own identity. i was particularly impressed by the funky 'never never love a married man' and 'you got me started' however the versions of 'i'd rather go blind' and 'sunny' are perhaps to familiar and a little bland. so for a great classic soul album this is worth a listen.

With the ones I have heard of, these versions don't sound radically different to the originals & I'm someone who feels that if you're going to do a cover version either make it better or radically different from the original. In relation to "Mama Feelgood" which appears on here I'm afraid it's neither - it's good and enjoyable (as is the rest of the album) but I expected a bit more to be honest
2) the 3 songs which aren't cover versions are Speedometer songs available on previous albums & these versions offer nothing new other than being sang by a different person

If you know nothing about the band & are thinking of buyng this then I'd say go right ahead coz it'll blow your socks off but as someone who has been listening to them for the best part of a decade I just think they could have come up with something a bit more adventurous for Martha High's first album than a load of cover versions
