Grace Jones once said "Im no Loleatta Holloway". Singing as if she got paid by the note, Loleatta's boundless vocal abilities are a gift to the ears, heart and dancing feet. This, her debut for Salsoul, illustrates every morsel of her incredible talent. Gloria and Donna made great disco, but Loleatta took the genre and added astounding church-like vocals to tracks such as Hit and Run, Ripped Off, and Dreamin'; ensuring that she too would have a special place amongst the very best of the disco queens. Her power to knock us out on the dance floor was replicated on the ballads, Is It Just A Man's Way, What Now, and the totally awesome, Worn Out Broken Heart. That's How Heartaches Are Made, and the wonderfully uplifting, We're Getting Stronger (sampled on Whitney's last 'Million Dollar' hit), help to cork this album as Loleatta's all-time best. I could honestly listen to it a million times over and never tire of it.
Big Break Records have added essential bonus material to this reissue, making it a critical purchase, and as usual, the sound quality and liner notes could not be bettered. That said, my copy includes the hit Runaway and an additional extended disco mix of Dreamin'. Could there be two different BBR releases out there, or is it just a track listing error here on Amazon?
I met the incredibly warm and generous Miss Holloway after her outrageous stage show at a popular London club. During Love Sensation, her signature tune, the bubbly singer dropped to her knees and subjected her microphone to simulated fellatio; not at all what I was expecting from the former gospel singer...but it went down well (!) with the mostly gay audience. The gorgeous lady was kind enough to autograph my records (including the original of this one) and gave me the biggest kiss, ever; a memory I will treasure for a lifetime.
Loleatta was a hit vocal sensation, and a truly special human being, too. With abilities that will never be surpassed, this incredible CD is a poignant reminder of her talent, but also of our sadness that she is no longer physically here. RIP and love, sweet lady. xxx
