Really good stories are not as common as I would like, so it is a pleasure to find a new writer who can make the grade. This one really does have the potential to rank with Weber, Flint, and other writers of intelligent SF. The main characters are interesting and engaging and the motivations and actions of all the main participants are credible. I like this writer's style and the actual writing is of reasonably high quality. I am really looking forward to the next installment.

This was recommended by Amazon and I bought it as a cheap book to read on the bus going to work. Well I started to read it on the bus and then I kept reading it when I got home. Great fun and very hard to put down. It's also a good length which makes it even better value. I only wish there were more books in this series.

First off i want to say that i very much want to see more from this author, he has a talent at writing interesting scenarios that keep me in the loop even though they are very fast paced, something a lot of authors tend to ignore.

The overall plot of this book is clearly not the focus of the writing so is fairly generic, which i would normally dislike but he managed to keep me reading without any considerable lull in the story. The characters are suffering from a serious case of "generic sci-fi" something i really hope he fixes in later books.

He does rather need a new editor (although i believe he may be doing it himself atm but that's word of mouth) nothing major but a few times there were names misplaced and overuse of punctuation marks breaking the sentence flow.

Overall despite it's flaws the story spoke for itself and I found it very enjoyable, not in the same league as Ian M Banks but with some work on characters he may be able to get almost 3/4 as good as him. (Yes i'm a massive Ian M Banks fanboy)

This is a reasonably good space opera storyline. It disregards any limitations of known physics as many such stories do, and you have to take that as part of the author's approach. However this story is marred by poor editing and misuse of words. There are quite a few mangled sentences where superfluous words have crept in, and the author cannot distinguish between discreet and discrete (always using the latter spelling even when it's wrong). 'Breech' instead of 'breach' is another, and the silly 'taking another tact'. This spoiled it for me hence fewer stars.

Highly technical with plenty of space battles and some close combat. A story of invasion and fight for existence.
An empire plots to invade the neighboring empire with superior resources. Years of secretly developed technology and secretly built army are thrown against the complacent monarchy. Only the brilliance of some recently graduated cadets save the kingdom from complete annihilation.
Slightly predictable, nevertheless entertaining. The characters are well developed and believable.

Good start to what looks to be an on going series. Read through it in a couple of evening's and didn't really want to put it down. Not a totally original plot, it did borrow from some of your favourite tv and novels - but sometimes the old ideas are the best. Engaging characters, good plot and some well thought out battles. Can't really ask for more - except the next book!

All there is to say is Roll on Book Two. Great battles, if a bit two dimensional, and a really pulsating storyline. Shades of Honor Harrington for the main character but the support cast is also good. Hope she does not get promoted too fast so she can see lots more action. Buy it.

Very enjoyable read. Only thing I felt was a bit overdone was that 3 of the characters get promoted a bit fast and are all super talented. Other than that its a very good read and one for starship combat fans. I will get the next one.
