5.0 out of 5 stars excellent film
i give this 5 stars because the film gets you hooked from start to finish, you just want to get onto the film set and give yossi a big hug! such a nice bloke but so unlucky in love.

Yossi is a bit disappointing, in spite of the genial presence of Ohad Knoller and the appealing faces on the box. It tells the story of a closeted hospital doctor who leaves Tel Aviv spontaneously and goes to a holiday resort where he meets some soldiers, and particularly one with whom he starts a romance. For some reason it fails to come to life, and I kept wondering what it was trying to show. Nothing was interesting enough, and the settings lacked magic. The early part of the film, where he hooks up with a very conceited stranger for sex, and then visits the parents of his lover from Yossi and Jagger for a painful revelation of the truth, gives no pleasure, nor does the section in the hospital at the start. Apparently there was no script, which may account for its sense of randomness. The same feeling dominates in Time Off, a 43-minute short which seems far too long, showing how an amiable army recruit, who may be gay, sees his `superior' having gay sex in a toilet. Nothing is said and most of the film details the unit doing manoeuvres and then stopping off in Tel Aviv, where this incident occurs. Little touches of solidarity between people we hardly have any sense of do not compensate, and don't quite seem real in any case. It's probably for those who loved Yossi and Jagger only, being like a re-run only less interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't deprive yourself, 20 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Yossi [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
This is quite a rare film in itself - a follow up to the much acclaimed `Yossi and Jagger'. This scenario is set 10 years after the death of Jagger. 10 years in which Yossi has refused to mourn or move on. In fact he has learned nothing from his relationship with Jagger in that he has remained closeted despite hints from his doctor colleagues that they suspect he may be gay. He has `let himself go' largely because he drowns himself in his work to the neglect of everything else. And then he meets Jagger's mother in the hospital. He claims not to know her but the meeting awakes something deep inside him that has to be released or it will kill him. He goes to meet the family of his former lover to reveal their son's relationship with him in the army all that time ago. In revealing their son's sexuality he effectively comes out to them and himself at the same time. It is clear that he has never healed from the death. Jagger's family are none too impressed with Yossi or his revelation.

He has remained stunted all these years even though his career as a doctor has developed in leaps and bounds. He is still the same closeted gay man he was 10 years ago but in worse shape because he no longer has Jagger to hold a mirror up to him or dilute his pompousness. He is forced to take holiday leave against his better judgement and it is a chance meeting with some soldiers on leave that brings him back to the one time he was happy with Jagger. He doubts he will ever get the opportunity to relive those happy times.

Don't expect anything dramatic. The film is sincere and focuses on Yossi's emotional development. It is well crafted and if you liked the original Yossi and Jagger film then you have to see this. You would be depriving yourself if you didn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yossi a hidden gem of a film., 1 Mar. 2014

Adam Younger,Glasgow.Came across this dvd by chance when browsing and read the reviews. A film you can see without knowing about the "prequel", "Yossi and Jagger" which I've now also purchased. A gem of a film, you can really relate to the characters and Yossi in particular. It'll be one of the films I'll watch time and again and never tire of. Yossi's inner torment over Jagger's fate has haunted him and finds it hard to relate to relationships and also a lack of inner trust in himself in making a commitment to others. When Tom starts to show his feelings and also to see through Yossi's "defences", you just hope it works out. You just want it to work out between them and my only gripe was that the film ended too soon. A bit more development between Tom and Yossi would've been good and I hope there's a Yossi "trilogy" in that the Yossi-Tom story I feel has a lot of mileage left for a further film. Hope Eytan Fox gets both Yossi(Ohad Knoller) and Tom(Oz Zehavi) together again(hopefully not having to wait a further 10 years). Also the second half of the film was set in Eilat which is a bonus. A fantastic film, great actors, and fully deserves 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and genuine, 7 Mar. 2013

The predecessor to 'Yossi', 'Yossi and Jager' was both delightful and heartbreaking. 'Yossi' is no disappointment and is the very real depiction of the journey of a man who lost his love too early, and who slowly realises that there is life beyond pain and loss. The acting is first class, Israeli society is portrayed candidly and the chemistry between the two main actors is utterly believable. And thank you to the film for introducing me to the music of Keren Ann.

5.0 out of 5 stars TEN YEARS OVER MOURNING, 6 Mar. 2013

If you've seen "Yossi & Yage", this film "Yossi" is its counterpoint..... not helpful though!! ??
Well, you don't have to have seen the fisrt one, but you should indeed!!
Both films are very good, for different reasons....
The first one is a subtle and strong love story ending dramatically, this one is a dull life ending towards a future.....
But still, there is still the permanent state of war, tens years away, and life takes over.....when it was taken over...
There is still the beautifully mastered direction of actors, the filming....
A very, very good film!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Superb Film from Director Eytan Fox, 7 May 2013

One of life's most important lessons is that you are responsible for creating your own life experiences. Israeli doctor Yossi ("Joey") has chosen a life of evasions and denials. Even his closest friend doesn't know Yossi's sexual orientation, although the hospital is rife with rumors.

When Yossi opens up to someone with a close connection to his past, he is literally "shown the door". So even on a long overdue vacation, he makes up his mind to shut himself off from anything that touches who he really is.Luckily for him, young Israeli soldier Tom is equally determined to live the truth and to force Yossi's hand to do the same. Their battle of wills forms the core of this superb and deeply subtle film.

If you aren't familiar with Yossi's back story from the earlier film, "Yossi and Jagger", it will not diminish your enjoyment of the new film in the least. But you'll be missing out on another perceptive and heartbreaking effort from director Eytan Fox, the talented director of this outstanding new release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 11 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Yossi [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
I got this dvd as my birthday present I am delighted with it. I saw "Yossi and Jagger" a few years ago and still cannot forget the closing scenes of it.
This time we meet Yossi 10 years later...His look has changed, but he still stays in the closet...He still hasn't been able to cope with the death of his lover...To overcome the sadness...
Apart from great acting, direction, the thing that drew my attention was the soundtrack. I hope it is available somewhere to buy. All songs fit the action perfectly. There is something special about hebrew music (and I mean pop or oldies)...

Among the extra features on this dvd, one can find a short movie ("Time off") done by Eytan Fox many years ago. I think it gave him the idea to make "Yossi and Jagger" later.
To my surprise, this project is BETTER than many gay theme films made today!!! Really worth to watch. A big plus to release it together with "Yossi".
TWO THUMBS UP.

Eytan Fox's movies are wonderful stories of gay life in Israel. Yossi and Jagger was fantastic, desolate and well acted. This movie picks up10 years later. It was ok. It would have been better with more connection to the first movie to see more of how people have or have not moved on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pitch perfect, 28 May 2013

I can only add another bravo to the positive reviews already posted for "Yossi." The unhurried and completely human telling of Yossi Gettelman's healing after the loss of his great love and all the regrets that went with the tragedy makes the story wonderfully credible. Yossi's meeting after 10 years with the parents of his dead partner is heartbreaking, but is the beginning of the recovery of this wonderful and deeply grieving man. The second part of the film--the meeting with a free-spirited young soldier who recognizes Yossi for the good man that he is a great statement of optimism and salvation and will bring a tear to the most cynical of readers.

"Yossi" is a very fine film about a gay man and is, at the same time, a film for anyone who likes a fine film about the human heart. Highly recommended.
