Tommie Young's voice is wonderful on these recordings, reminding me of Doris Duke. Unfortunately, she was recording for a minor label in a golden era for female soul singers which must have hampered her progress. If you like your soul music dripping with emotion, buy this album - it's superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb southern soul, 24 Dec 2012
This review is from: Backbeats Artists Series - Tommie Young (Audio CD)
This is a cheap way to obtain the classic Tommie Young soul album "Do You Still Feel The Same Way". Southern Soul afficianados will need no introduction to many of these tracks. I am not sure why Dean Rudland saw fit to re-arrange the track playing order of such a classic album but for this price why should you care? Just grab yourself a timeless bargain!Thank you Backbeats for reviving interest in so much classic soul music.

I have collected the majority of the backbeats series over the past year or two and thought I would take the plunge and check out the artists series starting with Tommie Young. Without getting too technical about it, this album is definitely one for real soul lovers. The vocals are extremely dynamic and moving, hit you where it matters most. I also highly recommend the Laura Lee album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lady Soul, 3 Jan 2013
This review is from: Backbeats Artists Series - Tommie Young (Audio CD)
Just as Aretha's star began to wane in the 70's, Tommie Young seemed to be waiting in the wings ready to take over. She had the voice and the songs BUT the record buying public thought differently - they didn't buy! So, sadly, Tommie threw in the towel before she'd even got properly established.

The songs range from southern soul angst through Motown to Northern Soul-type stompers and Laura Lee-like confessionals. 'That's How Strong My Love Is', 'You Came Just In Time' and 'Do We Have A Future' should have been big hit singles, whilst 'You Brought It All On Yourself' and 'She Don't Have To See You' move into Millie Jackson sentiments territory - she's taking NO crap from him!

There's a little bit of plodding at times - the overly discofied 'Get Out Of My Life' is a definite wrong turn - but overall this is a real find. Yet another Backbeats record that's well worth buying.
