This review is from: Folk Tunes (Audio CD)
The second album from this innovative five-piece, Folk Tunes follows on from the award winning Downtown Illusions.
This is a beautifully crafted album, with a strong sense of continuity and sound across all the tracks, without being boring or repetitive. A mix of contemporary classical, film music, minimal music, and traditional folk tunes, some works written for the band and some arranged by the band for their unique instrumentation; yet all holding together perfectly, perhaps aided by the structure of Johannes Motschmann's three Folk Tune Rhapsodies spaced throughout the track listing.
It is difficult to describe this band's sound for anyone unfamiliar with them; classical musicians with the soul of a rock band - but with some other added magic. Five instruments meld perfectly - credit must also go to the producer for the depth and colour of this album.
I intended to write this without being more specific on the instrumentation of this band. In an ideal world everyone would already accept what a stunningly beautiful instrument the recorder can be and it wouldn't need to be mentioned. But until then I have the sneaking suspicion that this is going to remain something novel that people catch onto about these guys. So, if you needed a reason to at least listen to this band, do it to find out what the recorder is capable of in the right hands. And if this doesn't convince you, nothing will.
