Very happy with this DVD.

For less that £5 you get over 2 hours of Thomas & his fiends. That's 26 episodes to keep you and your kids happy. Also very pleased that the DVD has subtitles too.

Also what I loved about series 1 is some story lines follow on. Like when Henry is bricked up inside the tunnel and we even see him bricked up for a good few eps before they take the wall down & let him out again. You don't get much of that with kids shows these days :(

This DVD contains all 26 episodes of the very first series of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (or if you prefer the modern name; Thomas and Friends).

The original episodes are here in their entirety, with the only changes that my (then 2 year old) memory can recall being remastered captions in the opening title sequence (different title, slightly different words used etc. The original theme tune is still there though!).

This first series adapted stories from the first 8 books of `The Railway Series' by the late Rev. W. Awdry - creator of the Island of Sodor and all its inhabitants. We're introduced to engines such as Gordon, Henry and Edward - the original 3 engines in the book series before Thomas was even thought of - a new engine called James, and of course everyone's favourite Tank Engine from the title (plus other emerging characters).

What I admire about these shows to this day is that the stories and characters pull no punches - there's a lot of morally and ethically based material here that you simply don't get in `generalised' kids shows from today and, after watching them again 30 years later, some of the tales are actually quite aggressive and even `dark'. They strike a profound and clear message for children, even at this early age and in an almost subliminal form. Of course there's nothing though that would offend and it's certainly suitable for all.

There are no special features unfortunately, just an episode select, but the material is timeless and the first series is arguably the best.

Without doubt one of the best, most significant and culturally important TV shows - for any age group - ever made.

We all love it, no more arguments about who wants what on t.v. it's agreed. Narrated by Ringo Star all the stories from the beginning - awesome. Some people may think it's a little old fashioned but my kids love it and would watch it from beginning to end if I let them! I would recommend this dvd to all Thomas fans young and old. It arrived in perfect condition and quickly too.

These are based on Rev W Awdrys' original stories, and are much better than the later ones. Stories follow on from each other, and will often reference something that has happened in a previous episode.
With 26 episodes on the disc, all narrated by Ringo Star (much better than later series) it is excellent value for money and will keep the little ones entertained for ages - especially if they like their trains!

bought this dvd for grandson who loves thomas and his friends. he has other thomas dvds from later series which i have to say keeps his attention more than the original first series. he is only young and obviously does not remember the origional ones which were narrated by ringo starr. would definitely recommend the later series of thomas the tank.

My little girl (3) absolutely loves this DVD and plays the episodes over and over. They are very short and so it is a bit painful when she wants to choose the episodes herself, as opposed to playall. I didn't realise Thomas and the other engines could be naughty/willful and so I quite enjoy the story lines too...they are a little dark in places.

I've never grown old of Thomas The Tank Engine. Who would. Up until 2003 it was short, sweet, simple stories and amazing modelling skills. This series shows why. With it all being restored to pristine quality, and of course Ringo Starr's astounding narration, where can you go wrong with this product. I'd recommend this along with seasons 2 and 3

I probably haven't seen these episodes since they originally aired nearly thirty years ago. Time has actually been quite kind to them, the only minor problems are continuity issues such as coaches disappearing. I also miss the original title cards, which featured the engine that was the focus of the episode, but that is a very minor point.

If you're anything like me you'll know how I feel, I don't understand why the keep revamping all the classic children's cartoons, Fireman Sam and 'Thomas and Friends' to name a few. This DVD is wonderful as it is the original television series (Thomas the Tank Engine) voiced by Ringo Starr that I watched as a child - wonderful!

Bought as a gift for a 1yr old who I'm sure will soon become a Thomas fan.

Chosen as Thomas has been around for ages and appeals to children of all ages.

Superb value for money and something that we can build upon with further DVD's, books, and train sets.
