Considering how little action there is, I found this book fascinating. The writing is as skilled and layered add usual for Duncan - possibly more so. The characters are beautifully crafted. The story line is so refreshingly realistic.
Imagine what space exploration by humans would really be like. Shares, double dealing, agendas, cramped long term ship voyages, hard work, uncertainty, a few days or hours of frantic stress and activity, huge danger, huge risk, the possibility of huge rewards... A far cry from idealised Star Trek style Directives and human morals setting moral standards that impress aliens.
Just consider the internet - everything comes down to money, doesn't it? Well Duncan has visualised this and communicated it superbly. Brilliant.
