4.0 out of 5 stars vintage authors of the old landed gentry kind
This book is worth reading if your interested in Spy novels, Crime fiction, with a touch of romance against a posh vintage background of the British Raj. It's a world that no longer exists and these books are the only way to witness firsthand the society that once was (without it being sensationalised).

I read this when I was 18 and it was impressive back then...

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad read
Dated, too wordy and boring, never finished it. Badly written, couldn't believe it was written by the same author who wrote the very enjoyable historical novels.

I read this when I was 18 and it was impressive back then. I didn't guess who was the "baddie" and the reasons behind the murders. It's a spy novel and has a few twists and turns, a dashing, debonair OO7 type and bona fide ladies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Time Favourite, 26 Jun. 2014

One of my very favourite books. I purchased it on a whim on my way to join a canal holiday and read it at my leisure. It transported me into a forgotten era, with it's wonderfully descriptive narrative. There I lost myself in the mystery.
I still think of this novel wistfully, whenever I hear about the latter day unrest in Kashmir.
