5.0 out of 5 stars A classic worth keeping

Only two series were made, and for some reason the BBC which commissions such dire bilge in its "comedy" roster decided not to commission a third. Yes, it is expensive to hire puppeteers and actors, but Mongrels was the funniest BBC creation in years. The main characters - a metrosexual fox called Nelson, his murderous cousin Vince, a cat called Marion who speaks with a Spanish accent and confuses real life with plots of home videos he has watched, a psychotic pigeon and a vain Afghan hound who is both brainless and callous - all inhabit the back yard of a pub belonging to Gary, the only recurring "human" character. The humour is simultaneously sick, postmodern, satirical, pastiche, gross, farcical, subversive and laugh-out-loud funny. Americans may not recognise the "celebrities" who appear occasionally and are sent up, but don't worry. The main characters are superficially cute but all deeply flawed. As soon as you think they seem sweet, they do something shocking, and the musical routines are fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars best ever comedy?, 5 Nov 2012
This review is from: Mongrels - Series 1 & 2 Boxset [DVD] (DVD)
Granted you've got to have a warped sense of humour to start watching mongrel but stick at it. The humour appears crude at times but keep watching. Then you'll find a multi-layered depth of targets all hit point blank. What's really criminal is that the bbc pulled the plug on this programme. Think they didn't understand it . But this is a top class act. They've managed to offend everyone without them knowing and watched as they llaugh at everyone else being put down. The vest comedy in years !!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Barking!, 10 Jun 2014
This review is from: Mongrels - Series 1 & 2 Boxset [DVD] (DVD)
....and one of the best things on TV in recent years! Proof positive that the BBC have their finger on the pulse of British comedy...

How to explain 'Mongrels'? Well, it's like a very adult puppet show...with a difference.

'Mongrels' follows the lives of a motley bunch of animals and rodents who all live in the same neighbourhood....

There's Nelson, the world's first metrosexual Fox......and the girl of his dreams, Destiny, an Essex-girl like pedigree who's as dumb as she is beautiful...then there's Vince, Nelson's expletive strewn anarchic - and sex crazed - cousin. Then there's Marion, the French inspired smelly street cat and Kali, the world's only black culture inspired 'street', yet cynical, pigeon.....

Their lives, their dreams, their thoughts and feelings all in 510 action packed, crazy ride, minutes that'll have you laughing out loud from start to finish.

Packed full of English culture jokes and japes......

You'll be a fool not to watch it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series, 1 Dec 2012

Obviously humour is personal but this series breaks new ground.
Very clever parody and very, very funny. I am almost afraid I will discover there's no third series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Up there with the best British comedies of all time, 18 July 2014

Up there with the best British comedies of all time. Also the most underrated show of all time. The pigeon should get an Oscar. In the end, too good for BBC3, couldn't bring itself down to the level of Snog, marry, avoid... Sun, sex and suspicious parents, Lee Nelson's well good show... you get the picture, but also too offensive, crude, and witty for the more classy BBC channels. Absolutely devastated it only made two seasons. A must buy!!!

If you are someone who likes to complain about every type of humour, walk away now. Mongrels mocks and derides pretty much everything going, and makes some extremely close to the bone jokes. Personally that's the type of humour I love, and to hear it coming out of the mouths of adorable puppets makes it even better. It's one of the best British comedies I've ever watched and I highly recommend it.

So non PC that I have snorted coffee out of my nose on several occasions. If you are looking for a laugh out loud, ridiculous comedy then here it is. It is dirty, foul language, violent and nasty and possibly the funniest DVD you may ever buy.

Not!

Vince, Nelson, Marion, Destiny, Marion and Kali make for fantastic viewing. Look out for Harry Hill and Chris Packham and a few other "celebs" making cameo appearances.

A note of caution - elderly mother-in-laws may find this grossly offensive.

Similarly, it is probably not a good idea to show this to your kids.

Ruff!
