Well pleased with this purchase, it took me right back to my childhood. Growing up in the south of England watching Jack Hargreaves was one of the pleasures of my younger years, I would never miss an episode of 'Out of Town'. Jack would tackle any hobby/activity associated with the countryside from falconry to ferreting. I think this series helped shape my love of the countryside & all things associated with it. The footage is a bit shaky in some parts but I guess it was because they only had hand-held cameras in those days. I would recommend this box set to anyone wanting a trip down memory lane!
Having just discovered this and the Hidden episodes collection - we were in a quandary if there would be too much overlap, but in fact there were so many episodes over the years, that one or two in both selections is admissible. It's been lovely to catch up on all the old rural pursuits, and the theme tune is so evocative of a rambling cart being pulled along. Arefreshing buy.
Simply delightful. Always been fan of JH, watched him on tv, when i lived as young lad in the countryside, inspired me to take up the old ways. I got the original box set a while ago , then showing them to friends, they wanted them too, hence purchase.A great trip into the past.
This is a fantastic box set to own as it covers everything you need to know about the country side. We have bought this for our little boy who we hope would rather be out with a dog and ferret than in on a computer.
A great series using footage from the 1970's but with an intro from Jack for each episode filmed in the mid 1980's and in his shed. For the most part this laid back, unhurried, un sexed-up style of observational television is a tonic to the horrid modern style of P C journalism in which there always seems to have to be some controversy to make it interesting (i.e. Countryfile). One or two episodes, however, do raise an eyebrow here and there, the British finches segment does seem a bit silly as does the episode documenting the removal of poor old Yarrow the donkeys' voice box!. However, the Stagecoach episode is fascinating as is the Rakemaker, real gems for sure.
Purchased these as a gift for my 78 year old Dad's birthday as he loves the old country way of life and is not impressed with many programs currently showing on TV! He was thrilled with these DVD's, watching them time and time again and reminiscing about things he used to do in his younger days. Some of the topics covered were not really his cup of tea, but interesting nonetheless. Arrived promptly and well packaged. Good value for money.
Superb content and very educational. I love Jack's low key easy going style, he observes and comments on events but never interferes or interviews. Current programme makers and presenters should watch and learn.
This was bought as a gift for a loved one who has fond memories of watching this years ago it was a wonderful surprise for him to receive the entire collection on DVD. They are watched over and over again.
