4.0 out of 5 stars Back in the USA
Time has been kind to Bert Jansch "Heartbreak". When it was released in the early 80s, I thought it was a bit overproduced and slick. It has now been lovingly remastered and I have to admit that it is a forgotten gem (with a few fillers). It has now been lovingly remastered and I have to admit that it is a forgotten gem (with a few fillers). The running order is not the same as the orginal UK album, but according to the staff at Omnivore, the original producers (who were involved in the reissue project) insisted on current order. After a few listenings I can understand why. The album have got a better flow. The bonus disc consists of a very good solo performance, recorded while Jansch was in California. A fine tribute to a truley unique artist.

This album has a quaint charm about it that shows Bert willing to experiment while his own muse had dried up a bit. Heartbreak Hotel is a bit lame, but the rest of the album is a lot more than pleasant, and an important return to vocal work after the fine instrumental Avocet. Although Bert's guitar conveys a depth that most singers could never match, Bert's singing is almost as essential. Although the record breaks no new ground, in the context of his career it is a nice album. Most importantly, Bert sounds happy. I really enjoy listening to it a couple of times every year.
