The downside of this book is that there are few colour photographs and no proper projects. It is aimed at the experienced knitter or those studying textiles. However, the upside is that it contains some fantastic charts which are relatively easy to follow.

This book is a good reference source for those who want to learn more about Scandinavian knitting traditions and those who want to work these motifs into their own designs.

The book does NOT include any patterns from which to make garments. Chapter 3 does contain text and photos describing some basic knitting techniques and some specific to Scandinavian garments but I wouldn't use this book as an introduction to knitting in general. There are other sources which do that very well and this book has other goals.

The book was written in the 80s and has an academic tone, interested in tracing the origins and evolution of traditional or folk dress in Scandinavia and preserving those traditions. The majority of the photographs are in black and white with a few colour pages in the middle. The charts of various motifs are great although I would probably make photo copies or hand copy them myself to actually use them so I could include numbers of stitches on the side and outline repeats. The charts are interspersed with black and white photos and sketches of actual pieces to show the motifs in context.

The book is organised first by region with text about the traditions of that area and charts and pictures of the corresponding work. Then there are some sections on types of garment, ie Jerseys, Gloves and Mittens, Stockings, and Caps. These sections also have sketches, photos and charts among the text describing the garments. There is no one section for just the charts and they are not organised by type of motif which can make looking for them a little more time consuming. I suggest post its or some other bookmarking as you page through the book.

It was fun for me to just to page through and look at charts and illustrations and mark things I want to come back to as well as make my way more slowly through the textual material. All in all, it will be a great resource.

Some interesting bits and pieces on the history of Scandinavian knitting, and a good source of the actual nordic colourwork designs to incorporate in your own patterns. A good reference.
