Firmware update problem
on 4 July 2013
I actually never got to use this phone, which is sad because I feel I cannot make a completely fair review of the product. Therefore, the rating will be based on the limited experience I had with it.
After connecting all cords, power, phone and network, my phone told me there was a new firmware avaliable and asked me if I wanted to update. I chose YES and 12 hours after the phone is still in "Software update" mode. It appears nothing will help. I have tried disconnecting the batteries on the handset as well as un-powered the base but the phone goes back to the same "Software update" state. I did read the information about firmware and followed them. This is not my first firmware update.
Apart from the above, I can make the following observations: The phone sits flimsy on the charging cradle and does not feel very genuine. The buttons appear to be made of rubber and the design is very old-fashioned. It does not compare to a celluar phone. Another thing is that it needs two power cords, one for the charging cradle and one for the base. For me it would have been more convenient with a docking station, both charging and base in one piece. Less cords, less space, less trouble :)
The thing is I always chose not to auto-update on just about anything because and I like being in control of the technology rather than the opposite. Now, I find myself in a situation were I never got to use the product because the manufacturer wanted me to update the firmware. Sadly, I was not aware that I autorized my phone to auto-connect and auto-update by approving the user agreement. Even so, would I have sent it back after reading it properly? Hardly likely. Unfortunately, the market for similar phones is very limited.
UPDATE: I actually got very useful information on how to restore the phone from the manufacturer and I am currently using it. It still is a cheap phone, but at least now it is working, so I am happy.
