It is unfortunate that I resort to using the word 'contemporary' in its technical musical sense rather than in its precise definition: John Cage has been dead for over two decades. Though 'master' is an unequivocal description of him as a composer. I know little of either the pianist or the soprano, and can only glean from their performances that they are well schooled in the finer points of John Cage. This album contains remarkable shifts in tone and mood, from the early-Brittenesque 'Wonderful world of Eighteen Springs' (which is also one of Cage's early works, composed in his early 30s) to the wild rhythms of the 'Five Songs', and the pair perform marvellously in carrying it through with skill and clarity.
