At the 2008 Olympics, I can briefly recall my parents telling me about the incident years ago with the man who collapsed before the finish line and I could not understand why he was a hero. I wasn't really interested in the Olympics as, for me, they were being held in a faraway country with athletes about whom I knew very little, but since they are being held in Great Britain this year I have become more and more interested in these events and why they have been bringing people together. I was then recommended this book by a friend and I now understand why Dorando Pietri's story is so influential and why the games are so important today. What I like about this book is that Bryant tells us the whole story; it's not just about Dorando's determination to succeed but also about a desperate man's hunger to be part of something big and something that affects people the world over. The London 2012 Olympics really are an event not to be missed, just like this book!

Upon reading this book I had no idea who The Great Dorando was or about his heroic tale and I was relieved to discover that he wasn't some sort of magician, as the name suggests, but an Olympic hero. Inspiring and moving, his tale is one that would have lived on for decades if it wasn't for the two world wars but I'm glad to see that it has been revived here and with such eloquence as written by John Bryant. I hope that people will read this book and remember this story throughout this year's Olympics and if we were to have a history-making moment that even comes close to this, just as it was then, it will be an Olympics to remember!

I had no idea who Dorando Pietri was and his history with the Olympics when I took a punt on this. However, by the end of the book I was embroiled in a great Olympic mystery. John Bryant cleverly reveals Dorando's story (and someone's clever fraud) through a well researched and well structured ebook that leaves you eager to find out the truth of this little known Olympic mystery. A short but entertaining curo's egg of a book, well worth reading whilst watching the games.
