Despite it stating that it may take up to 23 days for the book to come it took only 3. The book was also a lot cheaper than buying it from other sellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for undergraduate reference, 13 Jan 2013
Mims' Medical microbiology is a well written and detailed textbook on microbiology. The book takes a standard approach to the subject with introductory chapters on all the different types of pathogens, basic immunology and the interaction between pathogens and the host's defences.

The book then takes the reader through each of the body systems and outlines the common & important infections with common causative agents. The book uses multiple images to illustrate points being made, as well as having histology sections and x-rays providing the reader with a greater range of knowledge.

Finally the book has a section on diagnostic techniques and drug therapy, which provides excellent detail on how the drugs work. This gives the book a one stop feel that allows every aspect of microbiology to be covered.
The book provides excellent level of detail, and would be a valuable resource to any undergraduate student, especially those that feel microbiology is a particularly difficult subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A detailed medical microbiology textbook for undergraduate medicine, 18 Oct 2012
Mim's medical microbiology is a detailed textbook covering this area of the medical curriculum that is not well taught as part of the medical curriculum. Currently in most medical schools we are expected to teach ourselves the relevant PBL with either only one, a few or no modules on microbiology yet it links into the majority of modules we encounter. As such a textbook that adequately addresses this aspect of the undergraduate curriculum would be a great addition to any medical student library.

Having received a free copy of this textbook, I would suggest to any medical student who struggles with this area or has a particular interest to consider borrowing this book from their university library. Though aimed at a medical student audience, this book goes into detail beyond what is required for most undergraduate curriculum. It is however a very detailed and logical book that is easy to follow with useful diagrams that allows you to pick it up and either go for the relevant chapter/section or start from the beginning.

The book is structured like most medical microbiology textbooks with the first section addressing `The Adversaries - Microbes' which gives a tour of bacteria, viruses, fungi, host-parasite relationship. It then moves on to detail `The Adversaries - Host Defences' looking at immunology briefly then linking in section 3 `The Conflicts' to detail the interaction of these. The major section of the book then goes through the `Clinical Manifestation and diagnosis of infections by body system' which is a great section to jump to and then go to the relevant system you are studying. Finally the book concludes with a section on antibiotics.

To conclude I would advise any student to not rush out and purchase this book unless you have a particular interest in microbiology. However I would encourage you all to consider using this book and getting it from your university library to see whether it is of a style that suites your learning.
