4.0 out of 5 stars A taut, clever, well-made WWII thriller
In the Fifties Britain produced a number of well made WWII movies that recaptured the valor and victories of British arms. The war was past and the civilian deprivations that had lasted well after the war were going away. It was time to celebrate what Britain had accomplished. The Man Who Never Was is among these movies. It tells the true story of Lt. Cmdr. Ewen Montague...

3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable transfer but no subtitles
Considering the age of the film the transfer is not too bad but it is most disappointing that there are no subtitles for the hearing impaired. This is unacceptable in 2013 when the added cost is modest and technical ease of adding subtitles is so easy. A pity as otherwise this would have been a much better buy. The film is otherwise very good, it could and should have...

Good old classic film. Don't make them like that now. Good actors and in colour. Recommend it to everyone who likes classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good war time movie., 4 Aug. 2014

This review is from: The Man Who Never Was [Blu-ray] [1956] (Blu-ray)
Good second world war yarn based on a true story although some of the facts are distorted for some unknown reason eg the dead body is a Scotsman in the film while in reality he was Welsh.Clifton Webb and Robert Flemyng play two intelligence officers attempting to fool the germans into thinking that the allies are about to invade Greece instead of Sicily by placing a dead body dressed as a british major with a fake identity and fake information in the hope the germans belive it to be true. A very enjoyable war time film.

I always remember this as being a terrifc movie particularly as it portrayed the true story with accuracy, the bonus was that this item was in glorious colour. A must for all lovers of war films with a penchant for true stories.

An excellent depiction of a true story, more espionage than an action war film shows how the british planned every detail to make sure the story would be believed. A must for real war movie buffs. Highly recomended.

A fasenating war time secret operation based on a true story.
Recent TV doumentries have shown that some actual details are different from the film, but dont let that spoil your enjoyment
as the basic story is still the same.

A fine film by Ronald Neame, telling a most unusual story. Although some details were invented by the film makers, the story as such is true, making it all the more interesting. The transfer quality is high, adding to the pleasure.
If you like odd stories, if you like suspense, and if you like war stories that do not deal with the front line, try this one.
