5.0 out of 5 stars I was totally blow away by the Beggars - Alan Park's Hammond organ playing was absolutely brilliant, 12 Jan 2013
This review is from: Nimbus: The Vertigo Years Anthology (Audio CD)
Dear Martin
I was amazed to see your review of this cd set and I do hope you are well. Beggars Opera was the second group I ever saw at the Kinema Ballroom, Dunfermline - Nazareth being the first. What are your memories of Dunfermline in 1971/72?
I was totally blow away by the Beggars - Alan Park's Hammond organ playing was absolutely brilliant and, in my view, as good as all the "major groups" such as Purple and Heep. I think the first song I ever heard by the Beggars, at the Kinema (and before I purchased Waters of Change) was Time Machine. An outstanding introduction to your vocals and the rest of the group terrific playing.
I purchased the Vertigo Years as I wanted to have the first 4 LPs on 2 cds for playing in the car as I could dream of days past during long drives to work. It goes without saying that all tracks are brilliant, from the "classical" of Act One to the "softer" style of Dog. However, Waters of Change remains an everlasting favourite as it was the first Beggars LP I purchased after first seeing you in 1971.
Just one question, did you sing at the Grangemouth Festival as I cannot now recall the details from that great day in 1973. I was fortunate to see Beggars Opera on 4 occasions and thank you, and the rest of the group, for those happy memories.
Perhaps Beggars Opera will reform for one last great gig - Led Zeppelin did!
Kindest regards
Gerry - ex Dunfermline, circa 1973

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds great!!, 7 Jan 2013

I'm bound to rate this anthology with five stars because I was the singer on the first three albums featured here. Back in the 70's we weren't given all that much time to record in fact Act One was done and dusted in two days! It was a very immediate way of recording though and was done after touring and knowing the songs inside out. This remastering gives the songs a new shine while retaining the edge of how the band sounded live. Happy listening from Martin Griffiths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland's Finest, 27 Feb 2013

I first heard Act One as a thirteen year old with a growing interest in music.
At this point, I had never heard anything like it. Forty years later it still moves me and the remastering from the original tapes provides a wonderful sound quality.

I could rabbit on for hours about the greatness of Beggars Opera, the superb musicianship and how they deserved far more recognition and praise. I wont go on.
Just buy this set, you will not be disappointed.

Nice to see Martin's review. Good health to you Mr Griffiths.

4.0 out of 5 stars alas not in its entirety a best of album, 20 April 2014

Great sampler, HOWEVER!
The first fabulous 3 Beggars Opera albums are collected in their entirity on this Anthology dubbel-cd. That's a good job! The only mistake is: they put a totally wrong selection of songs (4) on this album from Beggars Opera's 4th album, called "Get Your Dog Of Me". This 4th album is a musical disaster, except for maybe 2 songs (of which only 1 is represented here: "Classical Gas"). It would have been a beter idea to put some demos from the first 3 Beggars Opera albums on this double CD, or even much better: a couple of high quality live tracks from around 1971...

4.0 out of 5 stars Beggars Opera - The Vertigo Years Anthology, 19 May 2013
This review is from: Nimbus: The Vertigo Years Anthology (Audio CD)
Beggars Opera's debut album Act One reviewed previously is a magnificent collection of songs that featured some magnificent organ, guitar and drum sounds. The organ solos with those meddleys of classical music and some guitar riffs made this album a classic. There was also a single included which is also a great song as is the B-Side.
The second album issued was more progresive and diverse with a more progressive sound. Both these albums are featured on this anthology.
The third album has some good moments but the lyrics at times is very cheesy. The final CD of this collection is a bit of a hit and miss with some great songs and a few clunkers such as the version of classical gas.
The debut album 'Act One' is what I find one of the best debut albums from the early 1970s in my opinion and the albums that came out after this were a progression which changed in direction to the point the final few tracks of this set remind me of the band Mountain with a new vocalist.
