I find Mr.Peden's review bizarre. Why buy an Opera Arias CD when you don't like opera and especially selections. The 3 Holderlin Hymns take up a tiny proportion of the programme. There are many fine versions of the lieder and tone poems. Why not buy them. The 2 star rating is a joke.
Much of Strauss's finest music is in the 15 operas. We have here in Ms. Isokoski one of the finest Straussian sopranos around today. She does not disappoint. The ravishing final scene (NOT aria) of Capriccio is a case in point. It is a soprano recital cd, hence no Ochs in Rosenkavalier for example. If you love this repertoire, then buy without fear.
The other review is like me buying Stockhausen and rating it low because of the lack of romantic melodies. Ref. the orchestration, Strauss's in the operas (e.g. Salome, Rosenkav., Die Frau & Capriccio) is wonderful. Read the scores. The tone poems were not wasted. Enjoy. I did.

Having been blown away by Isokoski,s Strauss Orchestral Songs, I bought this and was very disappointed - not by the voice, which is just as beautiful, but by the arias, which reminded me why I have never been a lover of operatic music and even less, of excerpts from operas. No cohesion, and the orchestral scores mundane compared to those for the Orchestral Songs and Four Last Songs.
