I've used this grill for about six months on a regular basis now so it's time for a review. It heats up very evenly and pretty rapidly too. It cooks the food very evenly and the floating top plate makes it brilliant for pannini's and toasted sandwiches, and it can easily cope with a 2" thick steak. I would certainly recommend this way above any other sandwich toaster or electric grill (I've had three G/Foreman grills in the past).
You can use this function on low/medium/high/sear settings when using the grill setting, or you can use it on a variable temperature (in celcius) when using the griddle setting. When using the appliance on the smooth side hotplate (griddle) the best results are obtained when switching the controls to the "grill" setting and having the heat set at "sear" - if you are trying to fry bacon and eggs or any other cooked breakfast ingredient, the other settings are just not hot enough and the food will take a long time to cook and it will tend to steam rather than fry.
When using it in the closed mode with the ridged sides of the plate I have found that the "high" setting is the very best for sandwiches, panninis, chicken, meat etc. If you prefer to have your steaks rare but the outside nicely chargrilled then your best bet would be to use the "griddle" setting and then use the thermostatic control.
The removeable dishwasher plates are a God-send. All in all I am very pleased.
This is a great grill. It Is a good size, without taking up too much counter space. It heats up well and evenly. The removeable plates make cleaning a breeze. The only fault with mine is that on second use the LED's indicating when the required temperature is reached both failed. I would return it, but to be honest I can cope without them and it seems too much hassle to send a large parcel back. I paid significantly less than £99 however!
The "fat" drawer stays in place when you lift the lid or move the appliance unlike some. The dishwasherproof plates are excellent for cleaning. We've had several such appliances but this is the best yet.
OK my thoughts, great results but (there is always a but) The fat catcher works until you open the lid and all the fat on the top runs off onto your work top?!?!?! Pools of the stuff if you open it a few times!
I have used it twice and already have burning stains within the element area. Oil must have run off the plate on the first cook whilst removing to clean!
It loses a star purely because of the mess. Would I recommend it, yes. I have had 3 foreman grills which are next to useless with no temp control etc.. This has temp controls and you can even leave the top or bottom elements off if you wish ;)
The grill is new, I've only used it three times, but so far it's excellent. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and it cooks the food well. My test for it was to cook steak 'well done', which it did beautifully.
I just hope for reliability to match the performance so far. I've had a grill with removable plates in the past (different manufacturer) and it worked for about three months and then turned to rubbish.
