I was blown away by this film. It tells a fairly basic story; young girl, bullied at school, belongs to a dysfunctional family, with aspirations of being a surgeon, who is also undergoing a sexual awakening.

But this is no ordinary lo-fi teenage drama, for two reasons; firstly, the girl in particular, Pauline (a superb AnnaLynne McCord) is having very surreal, sexual dreams involving vomiting, autopsies, and lots of naked people, and secondly, because the denouement of this film (which I couldn't possibly ruin) elevates it into something darker, and makes it a masterpiece. The final shot is one I will never forget.

Added to this, Traci Lords is phenomenal as Pauline's mother, perfectly playing a woman who is torn between a maternal duty to her daughter and the fact that, at the end of the day, her daughter is a truly unpleasant girl who does not make it easy for anyone in her family.

John Waters and Malcolm McDowell also make excellent cameos, in roles that actually serve the plot as opposed to just being a tactic for drawing in more people.

Overall, this is an excellent film that no doubt will develop a very devoted and large audience as the years go on. You can count me in already. This is probably the best example of the "everything is out of kilter" I've ever seen, and it certainly stands comparison with films like Carrie or Gus Van Sant's Elephant. One of the best films of last year.

I've been wanting to see this film for a long time and finally saw it today. Disappointing is the word that comes to mind. Maybe I was expecting too much, but there wasn't anything here that hasn't really been done before. The actors were all good and the idea was sound, it just didn't surprise or shock me.

This is an amazing film with a very hard hitting story and rather strange approach to certain teenage issues! AnnaLynne McCord the lead actress is amazing in her role along with a brilliant support cast, the film has a very morbid theme so it wont be for everyone, there is lots of sexual fantasy and death and blood, the whole movie builds up to the shocking finale and leaves you thinking wow, it has a lot of originality and is too much of a gem to pass on, if you want to watch something a bit more worth talking about dont miss this!! The only feature is a commentary but it is worth listening too!

This review will probably be rambling and incoherent, as even as I write I'm not entirely sure if I 'get' 'Excision' or indeed enjoyed it!

All I know is, some 24 hours after watching it's still on my mind....so it couldn't have been that bad could it? Very hard to define, but if I had to force 'Excision' into a genre, I'd say it was the blackest of black comedies I've probably ever seen. I laughed more than I squirmed....just! This is a brilliant exploration of mental illness and teenage angst vs. the 'keeping up appearences' ways of a proud, yet desperate mother.

What we have with 'Excision' is a film of extremes. There is lots of undoubted humour, especially directed towards the poor, downtrodden, 'I give up' father, played by Roger Bart. The heated, love/hate relationship between Pauline and her mother is often ammusing too. How many times have you wanted to throw food at someone, just because they're irritating you! A classic moment!

On the contrary, we have some very graphic and explicit scenes which play out in Pauline's dreams. A part of me thinks a few of them were over the top and a tad gratuitous, but then the whole film is surreal and boundary testing, so this isn't necessarily a negative.

'Excision' is a brilliantly acted, well made and pacey - and the final scene amoung others will live long in the memory. A strange link I know, but the final scene of 'Audition' grabbed me in a similar, 'oh my word' way. Powerful stuff. Audition (Collector's Edition) [DVD] [2001]

In summary this is not a film for everyone, but approach with an open-mind and I'm sure you won't forget it in a hurry

I'm quite surprised at the somewhat bad overall review score on here, I really enjoyed Excision. Seems it was a little extreme for some!

I saw the film at the frightfest 2012 all nighter in London.

The film centres around a troubled young girl called Pauline. Hopeful to be a medical student/surgeon, but possibly not for the best of reasons as shown in her dream sequences.
Excision is very much character driven. We are shown Pauline's strict Christian mother struggling to deal with and even love her daughter, due to her strange ways and disturbed nature.
The film tackles a serious subject matter, but does so quite comically. The dialogue and timing is fantastic, with all sorts of little political/religious statements also seeded throughout. It's laugh out loud funny and unsettling at the same time.

All of the character building is driven home by it's ending. A cry for help that I won't be forgetting any time soon.

It aims to be gross, the character of Pauline is supposed to be off-putting, but we remain sympathetic towards her. Some of this may be a little too much for people who aren't used to somewhat extreme cinema, but if you aren't bothered by that, check it out!

I'd say this is one of the most memorable horror film's I've seen in a while.
I'll definitely be picking it up once it is released.

I just saw this at a festival screening, and it is the best, most original horror movie I have seen in many years. Spellbinding, heartbreaking and gorgeously gruesome, this is a powerful piece of work that will stay with you long after the credits roll. If you find women's natural bodily processes disgusting then you may have some issues with this film, but it could be argued that this says more about you than the film. Overall, an incredible piece of work that has much to say about family, mental illness, and growing up as a teenage girl in modern times. Highly recommended.
