4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD 'BIG' TOWER BUT ON-BOARD NIC FAILED SLOWLY, 8 May 2013

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lenovo K410 Desktop PC - Silver (Intel Core i7 3770 3.9GHz, 8Gb, 2Tb HDD, DVD, LAN, WLAN, AMD Graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Personal Computers)
Hi all, this would probably have gotten 5-stars, but for the dreadful, drawn-out experience with the on-board built-in Network Interface Card (NIC). In practice what that means is your internet connection deteriorates - I thought it was some BT issue for long enough.

Took 6 months I think to finally fail enough so I figured what it was - the NIC fully disabled itself while I was loading to 'photobucket' for an Ebay-related picture set, and it was such a sneaky failure, for so long, it came across as a bandwidth type problem with the web - yet my BT tools always showed that was performing fine.

Nightmare weekend, just shy of a year I have owned it, should not overshadow the general good quality of the product - I got an Intel card from CCL Bradford for £22.88, just took the side panel off (you put the PC on its other side on the floor) and unscrew a little screw holding on a hinge-flap cover for the steel cover-plates, then push the new NIC in - I got the Intel CT 1000 gigabit PC express card - it has a short little connector.

Once plugged in, you can use it right away on the network/internet, but download the newest (Nov 2012) driver using the control panel/device manager way, make the system look on the web for the latest driver.

This under-the-table fault aside, the weakness with the system - if it can be called that - is that when you do the Windows 7 system assessment the only 'slow' item is the Disk drive. Could speed it up by spending even more cash, fitting a solid-state drive for the Windows OS - need 120Gb or so, then use the 2Gb HDD supplied, for data.

I say this because it's clear that as standard now, Anti-virus etc like to access the disks constantly - getting to be a real PITA and a load on the system.

The mod I did make, was to fit an LG Blu-ray player/writer in beside the standard DVD player/writer. Works well, but I did not realise the Blu-ray system actually PREVENTS you taking a cable from your PC and displaying the output on another screen! Now I see why LG supply some weird 'double-screening' system - it's to get around what I assume is a copy-prevention aspect?

So, overall, it's only knocked down by the NIC causing mega internet issues, sort that with a separate card, and to be fair, I was alerted to the TOTAL failure/disablement of the on-board NIC, by Lenovo's own system updater/status indicator thingy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and slick, 28 Mar. 2013

Did a lot of research before buying this including the interminable DELL website, which gets more confusing by the day.
The price vs spec of this PC was unmatched. It was a bit more expensive than J.Lewis but at least I got it with Windows 7 and not Windows 8, as I needed to hit the ground running with it, not spend hours learning new tricks!
Delivered well packaged and in good time. Ten minutes to set up. Speedy transfer of files from my old PC so was up and running in no time.
This PC is fast and slick, and has 3 speed options so you use the power you need for the application you are running. Very quiet except at start up (very rapid!) and it looks terrific.
A well priced/packaged desktop that does what it says on the tin. Happy bunny.
