5.0 out of 5 stars Do not play in mixed company
I was fortunate to be at one of these shows and if you don't have to pause this DVD to give your stomach a rest you are a statue. The content is wide eanging but some of it really isn't suitable for the very young nor the very old. But even saying that you will pee yourself laughing time after time and still go back for more.

For 10, this is a pretty decent purchase. You could certainly spend your money on worse things.

Those familiar with Kevin Smith films will probably think fondly of the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Although the title of the show refers to the characters, here we see the men themselves rather than two people in character - though Jason Mewes is often surprisingly like his film persona. This live show is effectively a version of their podcast but instead filmed on stage, just because they have a live audience doesn't mean they hold back though and the pair are incredibly frank in their discussions, there is nothing they won't talk about. These two disks contain three live performances (London, Manchester, Edinburgh) each one lasting about an hour and fifteen minutes. There are some extras too which add a further few cut scenes.

The inclusion of an audience gives the show great energy, obviously there is some banter with the audience, but in addition it's great to see how Smith and Mewes work in front of a British crowd and to hear how they see British culture - Mewes' Scottish accent is brilliantly crap! The first show (London) begins with an exploration into their first exposure to the British - 30 minutes later they are still answering the question - and that kind of sums up the shows. Those expecting stand up comedy may be disappointed, this is simply two close friends sitting down and meandering through topics and telling anecdotes. For some this will be boring, but for others (including me) it's a fantastic way of viewing a great relationship and feeling part of it simply by watching and laughing alongside them.

There's no formal structure to this other than an audience participation game right at the end of each of the three shows. Kevin Smith does guide things somewhat though and manages to reign in Mewes' musings and give the show direction. To start with Smith provides most input but by the end Mewes probably has the most to say and needless to say, the contents of the shows are mainly puerile, debased, and full of swearing - but they get away with it because it's all told from the perspective of two guys in their thirties looking back on life. They are still young, but they aren't kids anymore and underneath the stories of sexual failures, successes, and witches fighting Nazis, there is a maturity which sometimes shines through and Kevin Smith is clearly a very intelligent guy. The strength of this DVD is the bond between these two guys and if you're a fan of the View Askewniverse then you'll laugh along, if not then you might find it all a bit pointless. It's not all humour though and there are moments of poignancy, I'm not a huge fan of stoner humour and Jay and Silent Bob have been seen as bastions of stoner'ism', although there are lots of drug references here, the biggest cheer from the audience is when we hear that Jason Mewes has been clean and sober for nearly two years. Those who accuse Smith/Mewes of glamorising drugs should listen to the final part of the Edinburgh show - I won't give any spoilers as such, but it's a very sobering look at how drugs have impacted on Mewes' childhood and his adult life.

In a nutshell: Instead of being constantly hilarious, this is amusing with genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. This has great re-watch value too because you are laughing with Kevin and Jason rather than laughing at punchlines to jokes. I enjoyed this and by the end of it you feel as though you know them better and have shared a good laugh with a couple of friends who have gone through a lot together and come out of it doing well for themselves. If you're in any doubt as to the closeness of these two guys, the introduction says it all: "Please welcome my dad, and uncle Jay".

5.0 out of 5 stars fans of Jay and Silent Bob only!, 6 Jan 2014
This review is from: Jay & Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging In The UK [DVD] (DVD)
First of all, if you don't know who Jay and Silent Bob are and haven't seen any of there movies... go look up CLERKS, buy that dvd, then work your way through there flicks. then come back here and read this review.
So if you bought and watched the films, you must have liked them to have came back. Or you just kept reading even though I told you to go buy Clerks. Shame on you.
Anyway... if you're expecting 'Jay' and 'Silent Bob' to come out on stage, you'll be disapointed. This is the two guys behind the characters, sitting on stage talking about there lives and there experiences. Its like one long scene from a kevin Smith movie. If you're a fan of his movies then buy this dvd, if you watched them and though 'meh, they're ok' then don't buy this. Remember this is just 2 guys telling stories.
My one issue is the shows don't feel long enough. Other than that, as a kevin smith fan, I love it.

Fans of Kevin Smith, who,no doubt like me,own all his previous DVD's,will probably think they know what to expect from this one.Well your wrong, because there is a lot more on offer here.Yes were treated to more tales from Mr Smith, who once again is more than happy to open up his entire life to his fans, and tell them just about everything they want to know. There isnt a lot of talk about his movies this time out,its more about his personal life, but dont worry its just as funny. What make this one different is the presence of Jason Mewes, who seems to love telling everyone about his sex life, and doesnt mind going into graphic detail. And I do mean graphic detail,so be warned if your easily offended,do not buy this. The London and Manchester gigs are an absolute riot, and the Edinburgh one looks to be going the same way, then Mr Mewes begins recounting his childhood and his mother, and he really does go into great detail, and is very frank about things.Youve got to admire him for opening up so much, and being brave enough to tell a room full of strangers about these things. Each show ends the same way, with members of the audience up on stage,I wont say what happens, just that it takes audience participation to a whole new, incredibly funny, level.

Hilarious, filthy, insightful, moving, revealing. This 2 disc set is all of these things, and more.Jay and Silent Bob may be getting older, but theyre still an absolute riot.Come back soon guys.

If you're expecting stand up, that is not what you will find. Pure ramblings from Jason and Kevin, mostly Jason talking about sex - hilarious and entertaining all the same, but perhaps one for the more die hard of Jay & Silent Bob fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its funny but...., 31 Dec 2012
This review is from: Jay & Silent Bob Get Old: Teabagging In The UK [DVD] (DVD)
For 10, this is a pretty decent purchase. You could certainly spend your money on worse things.

Its simple, funny entertainment that any Smith fan will undoubtedly enjoy.

Ive only given this disc 3 stars for the following reasons-

1) If you are expecting the typical Smith stand-up comedy/odd storytelling/movie production tales combo of his previous DVD then, I warn you now, this is not the same format. And generally speaking although enjoyable, is not in the same league as his previous DVDs. Also, where Smith is known to ramble on for hours, each of these shows was a lot shorter.

2) I was at the London show, so I was pretty annoyed that a short segment of Smith & Mewes talking was cut out, and added as a DVD BONUS FEATURE!?!? And Im guessing the same can be said of the other UK shows and the DVD 'extras'. This is NOT extra bonus features and to even call them as such is pretty lame. Worse still, it is footage of them on-stage, so quite clearly there is nothing 'bonus' about it! The review loses a star for this alone.

So, to sum-up: Good, but could be better, poor 'bonus features' but worth a tenner.
