I have a Sony Vaio Ultrabook (SVT13) running Windows 8. The laptop comes with 2 USB ports one of which is USB 3.0. It also comes with both VGA and HDMI ports. I am regularly using it in a dual Monitor setup (either through VGA or HDMI, can't use both at the same time) and it works flawlessly. The reason that I purchased the Targus USB 3.0 was to have a dedicated docking station with power so I don't have to unplug 3 or 4 cables every time I want to take my laptop with me. It also meant that I could keep my charger in the laptop's bag all the time.
Well the charging part of the docking station works fine and is really convenient. It's all the other features that fail.
The video output is good but is definitely less sharp than when using the native ports. Also there is a slight drop in the performance of the laptop when driving 3 screens in total (the laptop's plus 2 more from the docking station) but not that bad actually. Still one can definitely get used to it and work more or less unobstructed.
It is the USB functionality of the dock that fails miserably. I don't know how they managed to do that but almost everything that I connected on the dock's ports failed to work as it should. This was especially apparent with wireless mouses/keyboards where the lag was awful. To make it worse, when I was connecting the wireless dongle to one of the USB 2.0 ports of the dock it was very slow and would randomly disconnect after 10-15 minutes. When connecting it to one of the 2 USB 3.0 ports the mouse and keyboard stayed connected but they were still remarkably slow (especially the mouse).
I had the same problems with audio interfaces and even external HDDs. At the end I could only trust the USB 3.0 ports of the dock but I still had random problems. Combine that with a couple of BSOD I got while using the product plus a scary bug that was causing the laptop to halt forever when booting if the dock was connected and you can see why I gave it 1 star.
I have already repacked the hardware and will return it back to Amazon promptly.

This dock is very versatile - has 12 power tips that power most 90W laptops.
Will also dock most Win XP, 7, 8, and even Windows 8 tablet pro devices.

Firmware updates are available from Targus website for the dock itself, and most importantly you have to install the drivers (on the CD) onto your PC properly.

I can connect my wireless mouse, keyboard permanently. Leave my power lead in the laptop bag and use the builtin power.

I bought this to let me share my new Windows 8 laptop across two fairly large DVI monitors that I already owned, rather than having to work on a laptop and single screen of different sizes.

It arrived in a very battered package, so I was somewhat nervous about whether it would work. Eventually, though, I got everything plugged in and after some fiddling around and installing updated drivers from the Targus website, I got the setup as I wanted it as the included HDMI-to-DVI adaptor allowed me to use two DVI screens. The only hiccup since then happened when one day it refused to display in its normal setup, but rebooting everything seemed to solve that problem.

So this gets 4 out of 5 because it works and has solved the problem I faced when swapping from a desktop with graphics card that could run two monitors to a standard laptop. But I wonder if anyone at the company has done any usability testing, as the setup process could definitely do with an improvement. For this price, I expect that aspect to be better.

UPDATE: This failed a month or so after the warranty ran out. After running through the (not-very-clear) instructions sent to me by the manufacturer, I eventually got it to work again. That revised setup lasted about another couple of months and it hasn't worked since. Nothing had changed on my laptop setup so this is down to the docking station. As above, for this price I would expect something better and so I've taken a star off. A great idea in theory but not very good implementation or usability.

I have a HP Envy 15in and this docking device works perfectly.
There is enough power to keep the laptop working (i.e. without the battery inserted into the laptop) with all the additional connections in the docking station (HDMI, Ethernet, Wireless dongle, printer)but there isn't enough power to charge the battery whilst it is inserted. Reason being, HP UK plug adapter sends 120w into the laptop whilst the plug for the docking station is only 90w. According to HP, this is a small capacity charger.
If you are going to use a second or third screen, make sure you set Targus setting for the multiple screens to the correct resolution, if not you may experience lagging.
Other than the above comments, this is a excellent device, a great investment.

I've been using this dock with an Acer Aspire S7 running windows 8.1 at work for a few weeks now and think it's so good that I paid for one out of my pocket for home.

I use it in 3 screen mode (2 external monitors and the laptops own screen) and have noticed next to zero performance degradation. I've tested it running 3 full screen 1080p videos each on their own monitor and they displayed perfectly.

The new versions come with an extra 3 power tips for modern laptops with small power connectors, it's a slight pain that they can't also be stored in the flip up compartment, but that's a minor quible.

Overall a great product.

Fantastic item! Works really well and was easy to set up. Eliminates the need to plug / unplug multiple cables to your laptop or tablet. I use this item with my 7" windows 8.1 tablet and it basically changes it into a desktop PC with connectivity to a mouse, monitor and printer...by just connecting one USB cable!

This is exactly what I needed for use with my laptop and the multi mains connections it has is great because if and when I have to buy a new laptop I don't have to worry whether it will fit the docking station, would def recomend

With the HDMI producing coloured snow, this has become just an expensive charger. I shall persist with this later. I'm sure that it can be resolved but not "out-of-the-box"

This dock has a great selection of ports, and adaptors to allow connection via VGA, HDMI or DVI. Works a treat with my Win 7 laptop.

Very unstable not at all easy to install. Try Plugable® UD-3900 USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Universal Docking Station with Dual Video Outputs instead work like dream. Used it so for a month. I had to return my Targus unfortunately all the way to Italy! At a cost of £40plus insured. More agro than it is worth
