This is a lovely and, probably to those not as old as this reader, slightly old fashioned narrative based on diary entries of what was a real pioneering adventure crossing the sahara and the wilds of west and central Africa, For a family of 4, none of whom so far as I know had ever done anything like it before, to achieve what they did was most admirable. I wish there had been some notes bringing us up to date as to what happened to the family after they arrived in Southern Rhodesia and their lives there and beyond. Perhaps, with luck, there is another book in the offing! I really enjoyed this and thank the authoresses very much.

PS. The various sets of photos at the back add much additional enjoyment. I think I tracked down the old Fiveways garage in Batheaston on Google and believe it now to be a sporty car showroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful narrative, 5 Dec. 2013

I do not read or review many factual books but I made an exception for this one and purchased for my Kindle as I am a reader of the author Diane Stuckey's blogs, which I do not believe I am allowed to mention in an Amazon review, so those reading this review there will have to do some research if they are interested.

It is a delightful narrative of a family's overland trip from Bath in the UK to Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia in a Land Rover converted especially for this pioneering trip which took place in 1952 when the second author was just a little girl. She has edited her mothers diaries of their adventures crossing Europe, The Sahara, West and Central Africa to reach their destination. What an amazing experience it was for this intrepid family consisting of Dulcie and Don the parents and their two children, Diane who was just 7 years old and her brother David 15 years old to complete a trek of over 7,000 miles in just a few eventful months.

I will not reveal any of their adventures here but just recommend this quick read to all that think they enjoy travel. To read what it was like to undertake this trip in the fifties when only the privileged few ventured abroad on holiday let alone undertook such a journey, is an eye opener. Also included in this Kindle edition are some interesting photos from the adventure which add interest to the narrative.

I would like to see this taken further with a sequel about the families life in Rhodesia, having edited her mother's diary I believe Diane would make a good job of turning her own diaries into a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars African travel journal 1953, 23 July 2012
This review is from: THE GREAT 1953 TREK (Kindle Edition)
Lots of high quality B&W pictures put a heartfelt face on the daily diary of a relocation journey from Bath,England to Salisbury, Rhodesia. Seeking a better life, Dulcie and Don, parents of Diane & David (7 yrs and 15 yrs old) set off for Salisbury in a used and modified LandRover on a 7,000 mile trek across gravel roads interspersed with shards of civilisation. Seeing extensive wildlife, and native families who magically appear out of the bush at overnight campsites. Experiencing alternate one way dirt roads, washed out bridges and native canoe based ferries for the heavily overweight LandRover, Dulcie's historical diary lovingly edited by daughter Diane fulfills a lifelong wish of her mother to record their journey for others to read. A quick read with nicely restored pictures.
