5.0 out of 5 stars Rev - series 1&2
Tom Hollander is superb as downtrodden and slightly faith-confused head of St Saviours. Great interaction between a host of characters who crop up throughout pretty well every episode including long suffering and rather amazingly supportive wife, Colin the drunken but eloquent tramp (is he the voice of God or Jesus throughout?) and a small group of others who help show...

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated stereotypes
Was really looking forward to this with all the good reviews but was disappointed. The humour seemed to rely on outdated stereotypes, which I found rather cringe-making. Good performances from Olivia Colman (though rather wasted though in the rev wife role) and Simon McBurney, but not enough there to encourage us to continue watching - admittedly we stopped after three...

I really enjoyed watching Rev on the TV when it was broadcast, so I bought it for my girlfriend's parents at Christmas and they have been really enjoying it.

I really like how Rev is adult comedy without the need to be really crass and rude and is generally pretty sweet, in a cute sort of a way.

What an excellent series with a great cast of characters and stories which both make you laugh out loud and also have an underlying message which can be taken at several levels. Laugh at them and at ourselves too!!!

II only started watching this series 3 by accident one evening and can't believe I had not heard about it before! Absolutely fantastic, jaw dropping comedy and the best thing since The Good Life! Have been catching up with series 1 & 2 now! This is what good tv is all about!

I was a vicar myself (and now work as a hospital chaplain). Much fun but also some very profound insights into the challenges that many unsung heroes face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and humane, 9 Mar 2014

This review is from: Rev - Series 1-2 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
In this enjoyable series, Tom Hollander plays Rev Adam Smallbone, who has moved from a rural parish to the East End of London. His beautiful church is a relic of the past, a symbol of an age of faith now standing in the middle of a run-down, depressing and irreligious area. His wife, played brilliantly by Olivia Coleman, is a solicitor. She is down-to-earth and a bit naughty. The couple discover that the main attraction of their church to the locals is the Anglican school, which has a good reputation; people come to church to get their children into the school. (I have taught in a church school and have often seen this dynamic at work - people enter a kind of enforced hypocrisy caused by the desire to get one's children a good education.) Adam drinks too much. The job is depressing - who wouldn't? He's not sad or inadequate - he's just trying to do a difficult job in an unspiritual world.
Like all the best comedies, the humour does not come from silly situations; it is based on realism and depends on really good characters and sharp wit. Tom Hollander does a very good job of portraying a decent person trying to do a good job in an unrewarding situation and extracting maximum comedy along the way. Apparently, the series won four awards in 2012 and I can well understand why.

British comedy at its very best. The trials and tribulations of an inner city Vicar. The key characters are very funny and the cast is stellar!

The situation is unpromising: a sparsely attended and run down church in a run down inner London borough, But as with much of the best comedy the humour is in the characters. Hollander and McBurney in particular are superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Show, 6 Feb 2014

This is a story about a quiet country Vicar who's thrust into a busy life in inner city London. The acting is terrific, and this is well worth watching. Good believable story lines that focus on ordinary events in the life of an inner city Vicar.

It is filmed in St. Leonard's Church, Shoreditch.

A good comedy and well worth the price.
