On the back of Jay's novels about a Midlands, specifically Wolverhampton, ex cop and the interesting characters - criminals - he gets involved with, I bought this prequel. Actually it's not so much a prequel but more of an in-depth look at the background of the main characters. I'm not sure that it was an essential purchase; it's the sort of thing a writer might keep as background notes for his or her novels and then tidied up a bit for publication. It is not absolutely necessary that you read this before, or after, you've read the complete stories. Regardless, if you enjoyed Jay's books then this might be worth downloading to your Kindle, just for interest.

I didn't really enjoy this book of short stories. I'd read "Old Gold" before reading this and I don't think I'd missed anything by not reading this first.

There were some bad reviews about this book, but they couldn't have read the description as it was what it said. If you come from Walsall which I do I suppose you can relate to some of the areas mentioned. Took me about an hour to complete I enjoyed each little story, easy read. Worth it as an in between book read, if that makes sense.

Having read 'Old Gold' and thoroughly enjoyed it, I've not been disappointed by this prequel. I'm also ordered his next book and await that eagerly. Well written, well constructed, a solid story line, full of tension; a ripping yarn indeed.

Don't understand the two 1* reviews. If you like Old Gold then this is £0.77 well spent. Four short stories expanding on some of the characters and themes in Old Gold. The story 'Fathers Day' is excellent.
Looking forward to reading more by Jay Stringer.

Didn't know about this prequel until I had finished " Old Gold " but it was a big help in understanding the main characters.

This is just a few background tales to 'Old Gold' and 'Runaway Town'. Its OK if you are a Jay Stringer fan (which I am).

Justa a short prequel, but well woth the effort to set the scene for what looks like becoming a nice little series.

A gripping down to earth and fast paced story. If this is the prequel I can't wait to read the main story.

Must read for Stringer fans. Preferably before or during "Old Gold" as it has a collection of short stories that give you background and introduction to some of the characters.
